Tour de Waterlooville

Always ready for a new challenge, and not resting even in their last term at St Peter’s, Year 6 pupils this week have been taking part in the Bikeability course (what used to be known as Cycling Proficiency!).

After basic bike safety teaching, and skills development on the playground, the pupils went out on the open road with the Hampshire County Council instructions to put themselves to the test on safe and sensible road cycling.
Well done to all the children involved.

Tag Triumph!

Congratulations to our Tag Rugby players at St Peter’s who took first and second place at this week’s Havant Area Tag Rugby Tournament at Oaklands.  Thanks go to our rugby coach Mr Crozier, and to Mrs Wibberley who accompanied the teams to the tournament.  Well, with an Irish Head Coach and a South African Assistant Coach, St Peter’s rugby teams are bound to do well!

Well done Year 6 and Year 2

Well done to all of the pupils in Year 6 who this week have completed their Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).  The girls and boys have worked incredibly hard this year, being as well prepared as possible for the tests.  We know, however, that the worth of a child and the value of a school is so much greater than anything that can be captured in a test score.  The SATs in Year 2 take a different format at the end of Key Stage 1, and remain ongoing.  My thanks must go to colleagues throughout the school who themselves work so hard to prepare pupils for both the tests and the full curriculum, keeping children calm and confident as they meet various challenges.

A floral coronation

With a perfect sense of timing, a crown of golden tulips has bloomed at St Peter’s to welcome the Coronation of King Charles III.

In school on Friday, pupils took part in a range of learning activities related to the Coronation, with many producing items to take home to add to the celebrations over the long weekend.

And of course, in keeping with St Peter’s tradition, Mrs Carter-Hall baked some crown themed colour coordinated biscuits for all the pupils in the school.

A Titanic trip

It was all aboard for our Year 2 pupils as they visited the Sea City Museum in Southampton as part of their Titanic study.  Ahead of the trip, the children had learnt lots of Titanic facts, such as the fourth funnel not issuing smoke as it was there for show not necessity, or that coal had to be taken from the White Star Line’s sister ships for Titanic’s maiden voyage as a recent strike had led to a coal shortage.  Did you know these facts?  As well as receiving great guided tours at the museum, the Year 2 pupils also gifted a book of their own writing to the museum as a thank you for the visit, and some extracts from this book went straight onto the museum’s FaceBook page to reach a wider audience.  As always, great thanks foes to both the school staff for organising the trip, and to family adult volunteers who accompanied the trip, making for a rich and unforgettable learning experience for the pupils.

Happy Easter

The St Peter’s Catholic Primary School community gathered in full on Monday 17th April to celebrate the risen Lord at Easter.  Over 420 pupils came together to reflect upon our Lenten and Holy Week journey that we undertook before the fortnight’s holiday, and then to celebrate the resurrection of Christ and Eastertide.

It really is quite a sight to see so many young faces gathered together for prayer, song and worship, and a real joy and honour to be able to lead this on a weekly basis.

Easter Offering

A great thanks and a massive well done to the pupils and staff at St Peter’s for donating this great haul of Easter Eggs to give to Stella Maris for passing on to international seafarers.
Pictured are Charles and Gregory who collected this massive clutch of eggs, and helpers Phoebe, Ruby-Lou, Shaye and Kiera.
Happy Easter to everyone from St Peter’s Catholic Primary School.

The Road to Calvary

In this final week of term, St Peter’s pupils gathered twice to look ahead to the events of Holy Week.  On Tuesday, using montage, narrative and prayer, the pupils participated in the Stations of the Cross during a service of Penance.  On the final afternoon of term, Friday 31 March, the school then gathered for a Liturgy centred on Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary.  These services helped the children to reflect on the events of Christ’s final days in Jerusalem, and we will return on Monday 17 April to celebrate with joy the resurrection of the Lord.

Back to school – for punishment!

Year 5 pupils welcomed family members into school this week to help with a Design and Technology deep learning day.  As part of their History unit on Crime and Punishment, the pupils were set the task of designing and building models of punishment from the past, ranging from dunking stools to the stocks.
Thankfully, these models were too small to be tested on any miscreant members of staff – not that they would ever misbehave in school!

The eggs keep rolling in!

Our librarian Mrs Porter has done a lovely display to remind children of our Easter Egg charity collection for Stella Maris.

Thank you Mrs Porter, and thank you families for all of the Easter Eggs that have been donated so far.
