Author Visit!
The children had a wonderful week last week with lots of fun learning. They also took pleasure in sharing their liturgy with their friends and families. Thank you to everyone who gave up some of their time to join us. Here are a few pictures.
On Friday the children had a visit from the authors of Supertato. They enjoyed a creative writing session with them which inspired our children.
Please find attached our weekly prayer to share with your children.
Have a lovely week.

CAFOD Fundraising
This afternoon we have had lots of fun fundraising for CAFOD. We have estimated how many fish in a jar which has made a link to our maths learning in year 2.
The children also enjoyed being creative by decorating a fish in aid of CAFOD’S theme this year for Lent where we are raising money to buy fish for children in countries less fortunate than us.
We want to say a huge thank you to all the families who donated money to CAFOD, it is greatly appreciated.
Please remember our Liturgy is on Tuesday 14th March 2017 at 10.15 in the hall. We welcome you all to come and join us for this.

World Book Day and King and Queen’s Day!
What a busy week year 2 have had this week.
We have had lots of fun dressing up for World Book Day and exploring books. The children talked about what they liked and disliked about stories and the reasons why they thought this. They also compared the similarities and differences between fairy tales. These are excellent skills to develop in year 2 which helps with their reading.
Our topic day was also lots of fun with all the children engaged in lots of History activities. They have learnt lots of facts about the Queen’s of Britain which they can apply to their home learning which has been sent out to all the children.
Please find attached St Peter’s Weekly Prayer.
Click on the PDF to read it and share it with your children.
We hope you have a lovely weekend.

SAT’S Meeting
Many thanks to all the parents and carers that were able to attend the SAT’s meeting before half term. We understand some families were not able to come. Here are some key points that we talked about during the meeting:
These are the tests which we will be asking the children to sit in May 2017. There is no set date we have to sit them on therefore we are going to be doing them over a two week period so they are spread out for the children. We won’t specifically tell them they are sitting their SATs that day. We will be doing it discretely to prevent any child worrying about them.
These are the tests:
- English reading Paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer booklet
- English reading Paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet
- English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: spelling
- English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: questions
- mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic
- mathematics Paper 2: reasoning
The children will be in the classroom sitting their tests and not in the hall like year 6 do. It is a relaxed process that is not strictly timed. This allows us to give the children breaks in between the tests if they require it. We will be aware of all the children’s needs throughout the tests.
These are the things we are doing to help prepare the children for the tests:
- Learning behaviours
- Regular test style questions embedded in the curriculum
- Practice papers
- Guided reading / comprehension
- Spellings sent home, spelling and phonics lessons
- Grammar teaching daily in literacy lessons
- Once fortnightly punctuation and grammar test
The tests are used to inform teacher assessment. We assess the children all year to build their end of key stage assessment and the tests are a small part of this.
Please visit these websites for further support with the KS1 end of year tests.

Please do not worry about these tests. We fully prepare the children to be able to sit these tests and all we ask at home is for you to continue to support your children with their reading, handwriting, spellings and maths particularly times tables. All of these skills will support them with their daily in class learning.
Any further questions please come and see myself – Miss Allen or Mrs Layton and we will both be happy to assist.

End of half term
The children have had a wonderful half term working hard learning all about the Titanic. Well done to all the children who went away and extended their learning at home. We have enjoyed sharing it as a class.
Next term our topic will be Kings and Queens. We have sent a letter home with your children tonight to ask if they could dress up on Friday 3rd March as either a king or queen for our topic day. Please don’t worry about buying an outfit. We encourage children to wear something they already have in their wardrobes.
After half term we are also going to be looking at 3D shapes. Please could you possibly collect empty boxes or containers which are either cubes, cuboids, triangular prisms, spheres or any other 3D shapes for the children to sort during their maths lessons.
Hope you all have a lovely half term and the children get a well deserved rest.

Titanic story writing!
In English this week we have been enjoying writing our wonderful Titanic stories. The children have shown a lot of enthusiasm for our topic this half term which has reflected in their descriptive writing. They have all of their knowledge to bring their stories to life.
In Maths we have been learning how to measure accurately using a ruler as we as recapping telling the time. If the children could continue to practice telling the time on an analogue clock at home then this will really help with securing their learning.
Please could the children continue practicing their spellings. Here is the list of words that they need to be spelling correctly in year 2.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

More Titanic fun!
The children have been absorbed in their writing in English this week with learning some excellent skills to help them to write their own story based on the Titanic. We have had some fantastic descriptive writing, rhetorical questions as well as exclamatory sentences. Lots of new stuff which the children have put all their effort in to learn.
In Maths we have been looking at division. The children have learnt to do this on a blank number line by counting up. If the children would like to continue practicing at home then please could they solve problems that are dividing by 2, 5 or 10. To challenge your children you can ask them what the multiplication sentence is that links with the division sentence that they have solved. For example
20 ÷ 2 = 10 10 x 2 = 20
Here is an example we did as a class:
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Another busy week in Year Two!
Year 2 have written some wonderful diaries imagining they were a passenger on the Titanic. They have used excellent vocabulary to really bring their diaries to life.
In maths the children have been working really hard on solving division problems. This will continue through until next week. Please see the Abacus and My Maths online learning for the children to carry on practicing at home to help secure their understanding.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Titanic fun!
Year 2 have enjoyed reading Samson’s Titanic Journey.
They have had fun using role play to show how Samson would have felt when he heard the Titanic hit the iceberg! This learning will lead the children onto writing their own diary, imagining how they would have felt if they were a passenger.
In maths the children have been working hard on finding fractions of amounts including 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4. It would be really useful to the children if they continue practicing this at home as it is a difficult skill that they have to master by the end of year 2.
Examples of problems they could solve are:
1/4 of 8. 2/4 of 8. 3/4 of 8.
1/4 of 12. 2/4 of 12. 3/4 of 12.
1/4 of 16. 2/4 of 16. 3/4 of 16.
1/4 of 20. 2/4 of 20. 3/4 of 20.
The children learnt to share the amount into 4 equal parts and then identified how much was in 1/4. They then added the amount in two of the quarters to find 2/4.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Welcome back!
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break.
The children have had a great start to the Spring term especially when we visited the Sea City Museum. Many thanks to all the parents who helped make the trip possible by coming with us. This has been a brilliant hook for our new Titanic topic, the children have shown so much engagement with wanting to learn more.
Thank you for all the wonderful home learning we are seeing linked with the Titanic including models, menus, tickets and fact files. It is lovely to see so much effort being put in by all the children.
We have all had a fantastic Titanic topic day with amazing costumes worn by all the children. They have applied lots of the knowledge they learnt on the trip as well as learning so much more.
Have a lovely weekend.
