Titanic fun!

Year 2 have enjoyed reading Samson’s Titanic Journey.

They have had fun using role play to show how Samson would have felt when he heard the Titanic hit the iceberg! This learning will lead the children onto writing their own diary, imagining how they would have felt if they were a passenger.

In maths the children have been working hard on finding fractions of amounts including 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4. It would be really useful to the children if they continue practicing this at home as it is a difficult skill that they have to master by the end of year 2.

Examples of problems they could solve are:

1/4 of 8.      2/4 of 8.      3/4 of 8.

1/4 of 12.     2/4 of 12.     3/4 of 12.

1/4 of 16.     2/4 of 16.     3/4 of 16.

1/4 of 20.    2/4 of 20.     3/4 of 20.

The children learnt to share the amount into 4 equal parts and then identified how much was in 1/4. They then added the amount in two of the quarters to find 2/4.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Welcome back!

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break.

The children have had a great start to the Spring term especially when we visited the Sea City Museum. Many thanks to all the parents who helped make the trip possible by coming with us. This has been a brilliant hook for our new Titanic topic, the children have shown so much engagement with wanting to learn more.

Thank you for all the wonderful home learning we are seeing linked with the Titanic including models, menus, tickets and fact files. It is lovely to see so much effort being put in by all the children.

We have all had a fantastic Titanic topic day with amazing costumes worn by all the children. They have applied lots of the knowledge they learnt on the trip as well as learning so much more.

Happy Christmas!

Yesterday year 2 had lots of fun making paper chains with Mrs Pearson and Mr Chant. It was an exciting competition between the two classes to see who could make the longest chain and in the end it was a draw!

Myself, Mrs Layton, Mrs Spicer, Mrs Wickes, Mrs Walls and Mrs King would like to thank you all for your wonderful gifts. We want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Looking forward to beginning the spring term with our school trip to the Sea City Museum on Wednesday 4th January 2017.

If you have offered to help we would be grateful for you to join us.

On Friday 6th January 2017, please could the children come into school wearing something that one of the passengers or ship staff would have worn on the Titanic to enjoy a topic day.

Best wishes

6 C Day in Year 2

What another fantastic 6 C Day that the children have had. In year 2 the children have been making their own Christmas board games and tree decorations.

A massive well done to all the children and teachers that took part in the Mile for Maisie. It was a hard slog but everyone showed excellent commitment and collaboration in supporting one another to complete the mile!

Have a wonderful weekend.

We made some stockings!

The children have a wonderful morning making their stockings. They worked so hard on practising their sewing skills.

Now the children have made their stockings they will then be able to write instructions on how to make one for Bertie Badger to make who is a character from our class story that we are reading.

The children have also been busy practising for their Nativity ‘Christmas Counts.’ Please remember to bring in your child’s reply slip to request your tickets to watch the nativity. Once all children have been given two tickets each we will then issue out any spare tickets that have been requested.

Also please remember to return your child’s reply slip for the Sea City Museum trip which will take place on Wednesday 4th January 2017. Many thanks to all the parents who have offered to help. We shall count numbers and let you know before the end of term if we need your help.

Have a lovely weekend.

From Mrs Layton and Miss Allen

We have finally met the giant!

Year two this week have enjoyed meeting our mystery giant who left his clothes in our classrooms.

The children were engaged with asking him lots of questions they have been thinking about all week to find out why he left his clothes.

We have also enjoyed our Friday morning making our houses for animals. The children were so creative in what they made and they also showed excellent collaboration with helping each other.

We have been really proud of the children for showing excellent commitment to their home learning. We are seeing children reading, practising their handwriting as well as taking part in their maths home learning. This is showing great impact to their work in year two so we would like to thank you for your continued support at home with this.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Miss Allen and Mrs Layton

Smartest Giant in Town learning.

We started our week with lots of excitement when we found some clothes left in our classroom. Lots of questions came from this and the children still haven’t found out who has left them! Hopefully all will be revealed next week!

We have also enjoyed exploring shape in maths and finding the line of symmetry.

On Friday 18th November we are having a topic day. This will involve designing and making a house for one of the characters in the book using different materials. Please could we ask if your children could collect various empty boxes, plastic bottles, wrappers or anything else that would normally be recycled. We will start a collection in the classroom during the week.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Many thanks.

Miss Allen and Mrs Layton

Science fun in year 2.

Welcome back to the second half of the autumn term. We hope all the children had a lovely break.

We have had another great week of learning particularly in English where we have been linking our Science learning in by exploring the different materials used for building houses.

The children have learnt lots of fabulous new language to describe the properties of the materials and why they might be used for different purposes.

Our trip to Wickes and Topps Tiles was a fantastic experience for the children to have a chance to see building materials for real and use the language they had learnt to describe what they saw. We are excited to see the writing outcomes next week from this trip.

Big thank you again to all the parents that have helped out with this trip, we could not have done it without you!

Please could all children practice their spellings and handwriting as much as possible. We will be giving children commitment ticks for doing this and sharing it with us in school.
