Friday 20th November 2020

Hello, everyone! We hope you are all well.

This week in Year 2 we have fallen in love with our latest text, ‘A Lion in Paris’ by Beatrice Alemagna. Both the story and the illustrations are inspiring and we are excited to see what the children will create by the end of the unit. We’ve looked at the difference between ‘verbs’ and ‘adverbs’ and had some fun acting them out when you combine them together! Maybe you can try this at home too.

In Maths, the children have been blowing us away with their grasp of fractions. We’ve had to think up some very tricky challenge questions to give them some brain pain! There’s a SumDog Challenge on Fractions this week too – Can you complete 100 questions by the end of next weekend for 100 coins?

Representing Quarters

Have a wrapped-up, warm and cosy weekend Year 2s. We’ll see you on Monday!

Friday 13th November 2020

Happy Friday (13th) everyone. We hope it has not been unlucky for you!

This week in Year 2 we have planned and started creating adverts to encourage spectators to come and watch the race between the Hare and Tortoise.

In Maths this week we have begun our topic on division. Look at all the different ways we can represent this division problem.

Pictorial Representations

In remembrance of Armistice Day, we have created beautiful artwork based upon the Christmas Day truce.

Have a great weekend. Take care!

Friday 6th November 2020

Hi everyone,

We’ve had a great first week back in Giraffe and Elephant classes…

In English, we’ve continued with our story, ‘Hare and Tortoise’. This week we’ve been looking at specific vocabulary relating to each of the characters. Can you remember what a verb is? What about a rhetorical question?

In Maths we’ve been looking at how we can use lots of different concrete resources and pictorial strategies for helping us with our multiplication. Look at our arrays and number sentences… Arrays Flip

Our new topic is ‘This Way or That Way?’ and in this week’s lesson we learnt about the seven continents and five seas. Did you know that George (The Smartest Giant in Town) has a brother named Wilfred who travels the world? Here you can see the journey he took across the continents and seas. Wilfred’s Travels. Your homework for the next couple of weeks is to research the seven continents and think about which one you’d most like to visit and why.

See you on Monday everyone!

Food Glorious Food

Wow! what fabulous Design and Technology we did today.
Enjoy our Eatwell plates.

Friday 16th October 2020

Happy Friday everyone!

This week in English we’ve been writing a letter of apology to the Three Bears from Goldilocks after she rudely broke into their home. The children have done a wonderful job of using their new vocabulary in their work. Perhaps you’ve heard them use some of these words in conversations…

In Maths we have been using a numberline for subtraction – this is a very tricky skill to learn which we will revisit again and again throughout the year. Please don’t worry about it. Subtraction features on SumDog this week too.

We’ve spent some time discussing e-safety this week and decided that if anything pops up online that we’re not sure about we should tell a grown up – just like Smartie says!

Have a restful weekend everyone, in preparation for our final week of the half term!

Friday 9th October 2020

Hello everyone,

This week in Maths we have been using coins to solve problems such as:

Mr Twit has some coins in his pocket.

He has 2 and 1 bronze coin.

What coins could he have?

What is the greatest/ least amount he could have?

The children have done very well with this. Why don’t you challenge your child to make different amounts from the coins you have at home? In these strange times, where we’re using cash less, it is important to keep knowledge of coins familiar.

For our longitudinal study this week, we have explored the Prayer and Secret Gardens in our school, looking for pollinators. We learnt that pollinators are creatures which carry pollen from plant to plant, enabling the production of fruit/seeds to make new plants. Well done to Max who worked out that there must be pollinators in the sea too!

For Home Learning, this week please log in to SumDog. Last week a number of children didn’t start the Sum Dog challenge. Please email the school if you need your child’s password/username details reissued. In addition, any time spent on Phonics Play will be time very well spent indeed!

Have a great weekend everyone – wrap up warm and enjoy the sunshine 🙂

Thursday 1st October

Happy October everyone! September has flown by, hasn’t it!?

This week the children have done some exceptional writing, creating instructions for ‘How to Catch a Gingerbread Man.’

In Maths, we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and plotting the numbers on a number line.

This week, we joined in with ‘The Big  Anti-Bullying Assembly 2020’ and considered who our support networks would be if we had any difficulties in/out of school.

Homework this week is to focus on handwriting ascenders (b,d,k,l,t,) and descenders (f,g,j,p,q,y). Use this PDF to help. Standard Font Handwriting Lined In addition, please practice common exception words ‘here’, ‘were’, ‘there’ and ‘where’.

Have a great weekend everyone. We’re already hearing about the exciting plans you’ve got for the INSET day – enjoy!

Friday 25th September 2020

Hello everyone! We hope you are well…

This week has been an exciting one in Year 2! We kicked off our new text driver (ssssh, it’s a secret!) by going on a scavenger hunt around the field. Can you guess from the clues which book we’re working from in English?

In Maths this week we have built on our knowledge of place value and how many tens and ones a number has, by adding 10 (or multiples of ten) to any number. Be sure to look at your Home Learning sticker in your diary for your home task and to log in to SumDog for practise opportunities.

We’ve also begun a year-long ‘Longitudinal Study’ in Science to look at how we can increase the number of pollinators at St Peter’s, which the children seem very excited about! “I’m worrried the insects will become extinct and the birds and frogs won’t have any food,” said one Giraffe.

Remember next week that there in an Inset day on Friday (2nd October) and that PE kits are to be worn on Tuesdays AND Wednesdays each week.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Team 2.

Friday 18th September 2020

Happy Friday, everyone!

We’ve had a great week in Year 2…

In English, we’ve been continuing our troll descriptions, based on the troll who lives under a bridge in the text, ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’.

In Maths, we’ve been working on representing two digit numbers using a range of different concrete resources such as Dienes, Numicon, beadstrings and numberlines. Here is an example…

Please see your child’s homework diary for this week’s home learning. Have a great weekend!
