This week, in English, children have planned their persuasive speech detailing who the greatest superhero is. They will be using their plan to write their speeches. Children have been working on using their multiplication and division knowledge to solve word problems in Maths. After half term we will be learning about fractions and decimals.
As part of Black History Month we have been learning about the ‘hidden figures’ who worked at NASA. We have completed research about Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan and Dr Christine Darden – all figures who have held important roles at NASA. Please find below a photo of the each class with their posters.
Home Learning:
Over the half term please ensure that you read daily and practise your times tables facts.
There is also a multiplication test on Sumdog for you to complete.
The children have been given a template showing possible dimensions for their gas mask box. Last year, parents found that old cereal boxes, tea bag boxes or small tissue boxes are great for making a gas mask box – especially because of the colour they are on the inside of the box.
In their yellow Home Reading Journal children need to write a review of the book they are reading/ a book they have read. This is due on Thursday 5th November. Parents will need to sign off book reviews to show that children have completed the review task and have spoken about what has happened in the book, their favourite parts/characters, etc.
Please ensure children practise their times tables for at least 10 minutes a day. We are testing their multiplication facts weekly from now on to ensure children maintain a quick recall to help with their mental and formal calculations.
As part of an individual choice of home learning, they also have their creative homework task ideas for the autumn term– one piece should be completed each half term. As the first half term is now complete, children should begin on their second piece of home learning of their choice to share after half term.
Reading Passport and Year 5 Must Reads:
Keep up the great work with reading the books from the reading passport. The children who complete their passport will be put into a draw for the chance to see Pinocchio at the theatre. Also, the class with the most completed entries get to have a complete afternoon of sport with CM Sports. It’s all to play for!!!
As we are coming to the end of the first half term, the children should have been able to read or be reading one of the year group must reads. This is important for Year 5 children to hear quality vocabulary that they will be exposed to in upper primary school to also to prepare them for secondary school.
** Reminders – it’s week 2 after half term which means PE lessons will be on Monday 2nd November. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit.
As the weather begins to turn colder and wetter, please remember children will need a coat to keep warm and dry. Break time snacks will be kept in the classroom until break time so they need to be kept separately from lunchboxes that children can unpack easily in the morning. They will not be able to access their lunchboxes until lunchtime.
Enjoy your half term and we look forward to seeing you on the 2nd November.
Best wishes,
The Year 5 team.
