Week 5 – 26th May 2017

This week the children have been developing their understanding of multiplying and dividing decimals with whole numbers and applying this skill by solving word problems. In English, they have been writing and then editing/improving their newspaper report about the wreck of the Zanzibar.

We haven’t set any spellings for homework over half term but the children should go over all spellings given so far. For homework the children have Mymaths and they need to complete the final section from the homework pyramid. Also, the children should complete the R.E section for this half term, which is in their home learning diary. This homework is due by Friday (9th June). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week Tyler Maplesden (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave him for working hard to improve his handwriting and writing style’ and Samuel Ford (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Victoria Parker (5F) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her to be a helpful and committed member of the class’. Isaac Ash (5F) has his work on the showstoppers wall too.

Today, 5F went over to Oaklands for a Science afternoon and took part in two experiments. 5E have this to look forward to on their return to school. Pictures from this event will be put on to the blog once 5E have attended too.

Just a reminder: P.E kits and water bottles will need to be returned on the first day back. Also, Monday 5th June we will be holding a meeting for parents to discuss the content of the upcoming SRE lessons.

Lastly, we remember the people who were affected by the tragic event in Manchester. Year 5 children have prayed for the victims and their families during our worship times and some have written prayers for our class prayer books.

Have a lovely half term break,

Week 4 – 19th May 2017

This week the children have been developing their understanding of: ordering decimals up to 3 decimal places; adding and subtracting with decimals; and solving different word problems involving decimal numbers. In English, they have been learning about features of a newspaper report in preparation for writing their own newspaper reports about the wreck of the Zanzibar.

For homework the children have 6 spellings using the ‘ible’ and able’ letter patterns, Mymaths and they need to complete another section from the homework pyramid. This homework is due by next Friday (26th May). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week Eva Townsin (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her to work really hard even when there are distractions’ and Freddie Dunaway (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. George Crocker (5F) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave him to work hard in improving his handwriting skills’. Jonathan Smith (5F) has his work on the showstoppers wall too.

A final reminder: the History competition entries are due Friday 26th May.

Have an amazing weekend,

The Year 5 team

Week 3 – 12th May 2017

This week the children have been developing their understanding of finding the perimeter and area of different shapes. In English, they have been writing their descriptive writing piece about the wreck of the Zanzibar and making a best copy.

Also this week, Year 4 and Year 5 attended a presentation by BAE, who demonstrated the world of coding, drones and robotics in the work place. The children were very excited to see the drones and robots in action and inspired some of them to follow this career path.

For homework the children have 6 spellings using the ‘shun’ sound at the end of words. The letter patterns are ‘tion’, ‘sion’ and ‘cian’. They need to complete Mymaths and another section from the homework pyramid. This homework is due by next Friday (19th May). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

Due to Year 6 SATs there was no Golden Leaf assembly.

The prayer bag in 5E went home with Anna and in 5F Thomas.

We are pleased to inform you that both Year 5 classes will be attending a Science afternoon at Oaklands. 5F’s date is Friday 26th May and 5E’s is Friday 16th June.

Just a reminder for children who are interested in taking part in the History competition, all entries are due by Friday 26th May.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 team

Week 2 – 5th May 2017

This week the children have been developing their understanding of: properties of triangles and calculating missing angles of shapes. In English, the children have been revisiting skills in preparation for writing a descriptive piece of work about the Zanzibar’s shipwreck. Some of these skills include: using the five senses (taste, touch, smell, hear and feel); different sentence types (subordinating conjunctions, relative clauses, conjunctive adverb, parenthesis etc.); expanded noun phrases; and figurative language (similes, metaphors, alliteration etc.).

For homework the children have been told to write a bank of sentences, which they can include in their final descriptive writing piece of work (due Monday 8th May). Also, children have been allocated a My Maths activity and need to complete another section from the homework pyramid (due by next Friday – 12th May). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week Mathew Evans (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘being committed to always doing his best in everything he does’ and Aimee Tindal (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstopper writing wall. Hannah Oliver (5F) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her to always be cheerful and kind’. Jeffrey Mamman Mathew (5F) has his work on the showstopper writing wall too.

Just a reminder that the History competition has now been extended and all entries must be brought into school before half term (26th May is the last school day).

Have a brilliant weekend,
