A tale to tell…
Wow, what a fun filled few days back. Everyone seems well rested and ready to get straight back in to learning!
We have started a new topic- A tale to tell
All based on fairy tales!
A new homework pyramid has been stuck into the children’s homelearning books.
We have started looking at the story of the 3 little pigs- subtracting building materials in Maths to retelling the story in English.
Next week we will be moving on to counting in 2s in Maths and looking at the characters specifically in English.
We have assessed the children in phonics this week and have found out what the gaps are in their phonological knowledge that need plugging.Over the next term we will be using this understanding to revisit sounds from across all the phases.
Please support your child with practicing reading, saying and finding examples of each sound as well as making up ‘alien’ words using the sound.
Thank you for bringing in all of the children’s baby photos/ books etc- it has been a great learning opportunity for the children to relate their own birth to the birth of Jesus.
We are looking forward to the next weeks learning!
A new baby has been born!
Jesus was born in a stable.

I’m pretty sure that none of you were!
Over the holidays, can you collect a picture or some information about your birth story.
You could tell us where the hospital was or if you were born at home. You may tell us your size or show us a photo of your first outfit.
This information will help us in out RE learning after Christmas.
The Aliens Have Landed!
As you may have spotted, this week’s Home Learning is to practise making alien words with your child. I’m sure this seems rather odd when many children are still learning to write basic words however the Year One Phonics Screening Check is 50% alien (or Pseudo) words as well as the real words.
Why teach alien words?
Pupils who can read pseudo words should have the skills to decode almost any unfamiliar word. The Government’s evaluation showed that pupils generally enjoyed the pseudo words. Of course, it is important that children understand the difference between real words and pseudo words.
Here are some examples to help you at home.
This weeks learning…
During numeracy this week, we will be focusing on number bonds to 10, for example
7 and 3
6 and 4
It is very important for children to be secure in their number bonds to ten, it is the foundation for fantastic counting with harder numbers further through the school.
In literacy we will be adapting and creating our own version of the Hare and the Tortoise. For example Miss Shaw’s story is the cat and the mouse- the mouse beats the cat because the cat is too busy eating fish from the pond to notice!
We have really enjoyed the children’s maps they have created for homelearning too- so keep up the good work!
Fantastic football
On Tuesday some of our Year Ones had the opportunity to take part in a football tournament at Southdowns college. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves, participating in various skills based games set up by the students at Southdowns. They will now be able to pass on their new skills to their peers.
Well done!
The secret garden
This week, Year One had the privilege of helping open the secret garden. Mrs Daily and Mr Cunningham helped to cut the ribbon. We then had a fantastic maths lesson in our new learning space.
Thank you to everyone who celebrated the story of creation in our Liturgy on Tuesday. All the children enjoyed participating in creating the world through the words of the bible.
