The robbers came for a visit!

A big thank you this week to all the parents who came to see us for our Spring parents evenings. We hope that you found them informative and constructive.

In maths this week we have been looking at the concept of ‘half’. When can a number be halved and when not? We have been doing lots of exploring around this using the tools and models that we are familiar with.

In English we have been looking at the book ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson. We have been writing questions and exploring what we can infer from a picture or piece of text. Today the robbers came to see us in school. They were very naughty! We sat them down and asked them the questions we had written. The children were very excited by their visit!

Have a lovely Friday and weekend.

World Book Day

Today has seen us have a wonderful time on World Book Day. The children were dressed in amazing costumes representing a number of book characters. In the afternoon we went to share stories with the children in the reception classes. They were lovely with the younger children are really enjoyed spending time back in their old classes!

In other news! Today we measured the rainfall outside the classroom (there was a lot of it!)  and took temperatures in different places to see where was hottest and where coldest. We then made our own weather forecasts for our friends.

In maths we have been counting in 2’s and 10’s and making ‘lots of’ using arrays in our books.

We look forward to seeing you all at our parents evening next week on Tuesday 4-7 pm and Wednesday 3.45 – 6.15.

The year 1 team.

Welcome back!

Welcome back!

The children have settled quickly back into the school routine.

In maths we have been busy learning about measures. This included solving problems involving time and weighing objects using non-standard measures.

English

In English we have started a new text: ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’. We have explored verbs and have acted them out. Perhaps your child could show you how to trundle, tootle and nip! We have been busy learning new reading skills including predicting and making inferences from what we have read so far.

Reminder: Liturgy is at 10am Tuesday. All welcome! Please support your child in learning their lines if they have any.

Ten-tastic

We have been busy learning to count in 10’s. We have solved problems involving counting in 10’s and have explored using a range of models and images. Keep practising at home and remember to count forwards and backwards.

In English we have been making information leaflets about toys from the past. We will send our finished leaflets to Beryl Collins so that she can add them to her travelling museum.
Science is all about animals. We will be thinking about how we can encourage animals to return to our school field. Look out for our animal feeders!

In our topic we have been thinking about toys in the past and placing them on a timeline. We learnt that some toys were played with thousands of years ago and that the only evidence we have of these is painted on vases and pots!

Have a lovely weekend

Another busy week in year 1

What a busy week we have had again… The rain has not dampened our spirits and the children have continued to show enthusiasm for their learning.

In maths this week we have been learning about teen numbers and how to make them using tens and ones. We have been using all sort of tools to make and record what we have found out as well as making number sentences to demonstrate their understanding.

In English we have been continuing our look at old and new toys and have started to make our information leaflets, comparing the two. As a separate series of inputs we have been thinking about how adding ‘ed’ to ‘doing words’ (verbs) helps us to say what has happened in the past.

We have had a visit from a drama company who ran a workshop with the children that they very much enjoyed.

We are having a big focus on forming our numbers correctly . We hope you have found the sticker in the home school book to support us in this endeavour! In phonics we are looking at how using the sound buttons can help us to decode more tricky words, and reading ‘alien’ words.  More about this at the phonics parent workshop on Tuesday next week at 2.30.

Old and New!

This week we have been discovering even more about how toys have changed. We have found out about the materials that toys are made from. In English we are beginning to gather the information that we need to make our own information leaflets. We have been labelling and asking questions about toys so that we can include these in our leaflets.

In maths we are going to be exploring teen numbers. The children will learn how to make and partition teen numbers into tens and ones. It would be a fantastic opportunity to  practice this with your child over the weekend.

The children have been learning about animals in science. They have been using words such as reptile, mammal and amphibian to describe them. What types of animals can they find this weekend?

Have a lovely weekend

Toys!

Welcome back to the new term! It is lovely to see the children after our 2 week break… and how busy we have been! We have all got down to our learning quickly and are enjoying our new topics.

We have started out topic this term on toys by watching some trailers from Toy Story and talking about our favourite toys. Today we painted and drew them too.

In maths we are learning about money: the different denominations, finding totals of ‘purses’ as well as solving problems.

In English we have started to read the book ‘Toys in Space’ on which we will be basing the next couple of weeks work. We have been particularly thinking about the characters in the story and describing them using interesting adjectives. We have introduced the children to the words ‘noun’ and ‘adjective’.

Nativity week

Another week of Christmas cheer! The children are really enjoying preparing for Christmas during the period of Advent, including performing in the year 1 and 2 Nativity.

The past 7 days have been taken up with rehearsals and singing practises! The children have learnt the songs brilliantly and really enjoyed performing to all the parents, friends and relatives who came. Thank you for your support.

In other news we have been thinking about the  period of Advent – a period of preparation –  and what it means to Christians.

In maths we have been finishing off our work on subtraction / partitioning numbers and are now moving on to 2D shape names and properties. We hope to have some Christmas fun with this topic!

In English we are preparing to write a letter to Father Christmas by thinking about how and when we use the word ‘and’ in our sentences. We had great fun thinking about what we might like as presents, discussing with friends, using ‘and’, and then writing our sentences.

They went in 10 by 10!

This week has seen us focusing on counting in 10’s in maths. We have been thinking about how 10 ones make 10, recognising patterns in the numbers and solving word problems.

In English the children are having great fun retelling and filming their stories using the story plan that they have been writing for the last few weeks. They have been able to remember the sequence and the twists and turns of their own narratives. Well done all!

In geography we have been thinking about maps and their uses and last week we made maps of the school in groups in the class. See map below!

This week we have been drawing our own individual maps. The children thought carefully about where the buildings would be and considered the ways in which they might be represented on their map.

Remember the Nativity next week. And thank you in advance for any volunteers that have offered to help on the walk to the Advent service on Tuesday!

We are writing our own stories

As we are sure you know we have had our important visitors in this week. The children have behaved impeccably. They are a credit to you.

In English we have been continuing our ‘Journeys’ learning. Next week we will be starting to make our films of our stories based on the ‘Lost ad Found’ book by Oliver Jeffers. Keep an eye on the blog where we hope to publish these videos in the next few weeks.

In maths we have been learning about how to find half of different amounts up to 20. The children have been introduced to the bar model to help them and have enjoyed using the practical tools to demonstrate their understanding.

We have also been starting to practise the songs for the Nativity.

The dates are     Monday 9th December at 1.30 and
Tuesday 10th December at 9.30.

Please bring in your child’s costume as soon as you have it prepared.

Have a good weekend!
