Where are our toys?

We arrived at school on Monday to find that our favourite classroom toys had disappeared! We discovered that a spaceship had entered our classroom over the weekend and it is still there if anyone would like to see it! Under the spaceship was a trail of moondust and a book had been left for us.

The book by Mini Grey – Toys in Space – gave us some ideas about what had happened to our toys and now we are on a mission to find them. Look out for our missing posters around school!

Well done to all the children who are now more regularly accessing Abacus and Bug Club. Please continue with this as the impact on learning has been very impressive.

Here’s hoping our toys turn up soon!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you all, we hope that you had a happy and restful Christmas holiday. The children have told us lots about their special times with you over the the last few days.

The children have brought home their home learning for this half term which is all about toys. And of course Abacus will be updated weekly along with Bug Club. Every Friday the children will be expected to share their home learning with the whole class. Please ensure that the children are organised and that their learning adventure book and their diary is in every Friday. Diaries should be in school every day. Please record any homework that is completed in this diary.

We will be beginning our new topic about toys on Monday 12th of January and are excited about the learning opportunities ahead.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Luter

A Wonderful Christmassy Week!

Mrs. Allen and I would like to congratulate the children on their wonderful nativity this week. We are so proud of them! The children have been learning about Mary and Joseph’s long journey to Bethlehem and the nativity really brought this to life for them. Our nativity was called ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?’ and we can certainly answer ‘yes’ to that question now! One week until the Christmas break when we can really enjoy some family time and preparations for the big day.

Tomorrow we are off to Hilliers in Southampton where the children will be able to see their art work that they created in school. Don’t forget to wrap up warm!

Thank you for encouraging your children to use Abacus at home, it really is making a big difference to the children’s learning in maths. We add new games weekly linked to the children’s learning so please continue to make this a part of your child’s home learning.

Have a wonderful week. Not long to go now!

A wonderful first week of Advent!

At the beginning of this week the whole school walked to the Sacred Heart Church for an Advent service. Every class contributed. Year one shared their ‘journey spirals’ which showed what Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem may have been like. Year one and two joined together to sing ‘Come Worship Him’, a hymn that we know you will all enjoy at our forthcoming Nativity ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?’.

In class we have been thinking about how we can get our hearts ready for the birth of Jesus. We have made our own class wreaths and focussed on the candle of Hope this week. It is so easy to get carried away with the hustle and bustle of Christmas time!

It has become rather chilly this week and the children have begun to learn how to read thermometers which are part of the weather station that we have set up to study throughout the year. I wonder what the weather was like on Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem?

Only two weeks left of this term it hardly seems possible. We hope that your preparations for Christmas are going smoothly.

Treasure Hunt

This week we have all been on a treasure hunt! A pirate appeared with a map for the Turtle class and there was a strange delivery for Dolphin class! Luckily we discovered the treasure hidden in the grounds of St Peter’s School using our developing understanding of language that describes direction.

The children have been working hard to perfect their parts for our Nativity play and we are really excited about sharing the finished performance with you all soon.

We are also looking forward to beginning the season of Advent with our visit to the Sacred Heart Church on Monday. We have been thinking about how we can prepare ourselves for Jesus and have made Advent promises.

Abacus Maths and Bug Club are being used by many children and are having a real impact on learning. Don’t forget to check weekly updates linked to in class learning.

Have a great weekend!

A Week of Remembering

Hello to all our children, parents, carers and grandparents,

In Year 1 this week, we have all been thinking about peace in our world.  The children have created poppies and prayers that reflect their respect for the people who have fought to protect us.

Their thoughts and reflections have been truly amazing.

We have also had our second Cinderella workshop and our art work is now complete and ready to be displayed in Hilliers Gardens, Romsey.  We are hoping to visit Hilliers in December so the children can see their fabulous work.

The children’s home learning reflects our respect for honouring the fallen soldiers as they design and create monuments.  They also need to continue to practise their letters and sounds and to use them in their writing.

Next week is Anti-Bullying week and once again we will be developing our understanding of encountering differences with respect.

Have a great weekend!

Year 1 Team

A Week of sparks and flames!

Another great week in Year 1. We have been using fireworks and Bonfire Night to inspire us in Art, Literacy, Maths, History and Geography as we investigated the origins of Bonfire Night and the children recognised and talked about The Houses of Parliament and who had seen it first hand.

We have also continued to develop our understanding of Traditional Tales through our workshops with The Mayflower Theatre. The children have begun to create a beautiful invitation display which will be exhibited at Hillier Gardens in Romsey during December.

This week our children will be encompassing Remembrance as we explore and develop our understanding of why we wear poppies each year, who we are thinking about and how these thoughts are important in our own spiritual journeys as we share a Remembrance Service together on Tuesday.

Cinderella

Well what a great start to our new context. We are now learning about journeys and using Cinderella to inspire our children as we create art work to be displayed at Hillier Gardens. Today we enjoyed a Drama Workshop from The Mayflower Theatre. We are all fired up and ready to embark on our journey!101_1206

Going on a Bear Hunt!

The children are having great fun acting out, writing about and using adjectives to describe the settings in this book. Their language skills are developing well as they are sequencing and developing their vocabulary. We are trying to remember to use capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end as well as finger spaces between words and using our new sounds and high frequency words in our writing. Please continue to use your Home Learning Adventure Books and diaries to practise our sounds and words.

Don’t forget to explore our exciting maths games using the log ins in your diary. This week we have been working on our double numbers and matching objects and pictures to number sentences. The children have enjoyed developing their understanding of these concepts through practical activities.

Teddy bears galore

101_1084

What a wonderful, fun packed 2 weeks we’ve had! We have used labels and captions, adjectives and sentences to describe our bears. The children investigated our school to find a good picnic spot, made sandwiches and prepared a feast to share with their furry friends! They have used bears to develop counting, adding and subtracting skills and our Home Learning has been spectacular. Bears are really proving to be a motivation for learning in Year 1.
