Week 5 in Year 1

This week we have been partitioning 5 using part whole models.

In computing the children have been exploring using a mouse on a laptop. They created pictures using the paint programme.

Week 4 in Year 1

This week in English we have been exploring the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ The children have retold the stories through actions and written their own sentences focusing on capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and using their phonics to help them to spell words.

We have also been focusing on prepositions. The children created their own buildings out of blocks and used the figures to show the positioning for example under the bridge or over the bridge.


In maths the children have been ordering numbers up to 30 to create their own number lines their books.

In Geography we have been continuing to look at map work. We had a map of our school and identified the physical and human features that we have.

Week 3 in year 1

In geography the children explored using a compass. We talked about where North, South, East and West is in relation to our school. The children enjoyed watching the dial on their compass move as they navigated around the classroom.

In maths we have been exploring one more and one less than a given number. They then found the number on a number line and jumped forwards and backwards.

In computing we have been looking at what is technology and what is not. We discussed things around the classroom that we use and then organised some images on the board together.

Welcome to Year 1

The children have settled back into school so well after the summer break. They are really enjoying our topic All About Me. We have been looking at the book The Three Little Pigs in English and doing lots of writing tasks around it.
In maths we have been counting to 20 and finding one more than a given number.
In geography we have explored our school and identified human and physical features around.

DT day making fruit kebabs

The children really enjoyed choosing which fruit to cut and put onto a skewer to make their own kebab.

This week’s learning

The children spent time making amounts using base ten. They showed each number using tens and ones. They also found one more and one less than a given number.

In the afternoons the children have been exploring 3D shapes in maths. We discussed their names, properties and shapes that are similar in our environment.

In English we have started our new book called Oliver’s Vegetables. The children explore lots of real veg and discussed some excellent vocabulary to describe what they could see.

Sports Day

The children had a wonderful morning taking part in Sports Day. Thank you to all the families that were able to support the children.

Fire Safety Visit

Year 1 really enjoyed a visit from the fire safety team. We learnt how to stay safe at home and what to do in an emergency.

EARA cultures project

Year 1 focused on learning about India. We looked at the location, weather and food. We looked in more detail about the clothing they wear and how it is different to what people wear in the United Kingdom.

We gathered some thoughts from the children-

”Their clothes are very pretty and colourful.”

”They wear long clothes in India but we wear shorts in summer.”

”They have their arms out but their legs are covered.”

Summer 2

The children enjoyed their music lesson with the ukuleles.

The children have also enjoyed learning about how to use the Scratch programme on the iPads.

In maths the children have been counting in 5’s. They counted bears in groups of 5.
