Week 1 – 6th January 2017

We hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

The children came back to school keen to start their new topic: space. Already we’ve seen such enthusiasm and engagement, and we’re only three days in to the new term!

Well done to children who have brought in great and varied formats of homework, we’ve enjoyed sharing them with each other this afternoon.

5E have enjoyed their first swimming session with comments about how well behaved they were from members of the public. They’re looking forward to their upcoming sessions every Thursday morning.

For homework the children have another 6 spellings from the Year 5/6 list, Mymaths and need to complete a section from the (new) Space homework pyramid. This homework is due by next Friday (13th January). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

Due to it being such a short week there has been no Golden Leaf assembly.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 team

Week 14 – 16th December 2016

This week the children have been continuing to develop their understanding of the meaning behind Advent in Religious Education lessons. They have also been continuing to produce persuasive pieces of writing linked to our chosen text: Private Peaceful. We have been so pleased with the children’s engagement throughout the World War topic and they have completed fantastic pieces of writing as a result. In maths we have been investigating 3D shapes and the different types of angles.

In the Spring term we will be starting our science-based topic: Space. In regards to maths, the children will be encouraged to go deeper with their learning and applying skills to a range of contexts.

As it’s been such a busy term and we feel the children have worked so well, we’ve only set two pieces of homework for them to complete by the first day back (3rd January 2017). We would like the children to research Guru Gobind Singh and chose their own way to present this information. The second piece of homework involves completing the Christmas homework that is set in their Home Learning Diary. If the children would like to do some of their own learning over the holidays they are, of course, free to do so (for example spellings and times tables)!

Due to the attendance assembly this week there are no Golden leaves or Showstoppper writing to announce. Year 5 had the highest amount of children with one hundred percent attendance, we are so proud! In addition, congratulations to 5F who achieved the overall highest amount of children with one hundred percent attendance in the whole school!

Children have been sent home with their P.E kit, water bottle and any pieces of homework. Just a reminder that the P.E kits and water bottles need to come back on the first day. To remind 5E they will have their exciting swimming lessons beginning the first week back.

Have fun-filled holiday,

The Year 5 team

Week 13 – 9th December 2016

Due to 6C day the children will be given their spellings on Monday. Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week Mia Wilson (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her for supporting younger members of the school on the way to church’ and Harriet Withers (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Well done to all the children for helping the younger members of the school to get to and from the Advent service safely. The service was lovely, the children were well behaved and all the people who had a special part to play did extremely well. Thanks to the children who attended the carol service – it was a beautiful start to Christmas. Thanks also for any donations made to CAFOD.

The children have enjoyed their 6C day today, completing a variety of activities and did an amazing job of completing their ‘Mile for Maisie’ with large smiles on their faces! Thank you for the donations made towards the Air Ambulance.

Have a peaceful weekend,

The Year 5 team

There will be a collection for this activity in order to raise money for the Air Ambulance.

Have a brilliant weekend,

The Year 5 team

This week has been incredibly busy – a trip to Fort Nelson on Monday, which the children seemed to thoroughly enjoy despite the weather; Mass on Tuesday which was a lovely a reflection of prayer and time at Oaklands Chapel with the Chaplain on Thursday afternoon. Have a fantastic weekend,

The Year 5 team

Week 8 – 4th November 2016

This week the children have been developing their understanding of key events from the Battle of Britain. In maths, we have spent the week focusing on developing the children’s understanding of comparing and ordering fractions using < and > symbols (equivalence has played a huge part in supporting this learning). Also, they have been writing a monologue for the Remembrance Service next week.

We are so impressed with the children’s monologues because they all include superb descriptive and emotive language!

For homework the children have another six spellings from the Year 5 work list, MyMaths and a section from the new homework pyramid to complete before Friday 11th. Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week instead of Golden Leaf assembly we had an Attendance assembly where the children who have been in school every day last half term were celebrated. We were pleased to see that Year 5 had the biggest percentage of children who attend school regularly.

If you have not done so already please could we direct you to Mr Cunningham’s blog from today regarding road safety.

Have a fantastic weekend,

The Year 5 team

Homework List

Homework list for Half Term – Autumn 21.10.16

  • To practise spellings.
  • MyMaths.
  • To choose a topic from the R.E page in our Home Learning Book (from the R.E Creation page) and it’s your choice what type of activity to do around this. For example, this could be writing-based or art-based.
  • To complete another piece of the Home Learning Pyramid or equivalent.

Week 7 – 21st October

This week the children finished writing their leaflets about Runways End and took them to Year 4 to share. All the children loved it, and we had the Year 4s telling us how much they look forward to going! In Maths we have focused on identifying key words associated with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and using this knowledge to solve word problems involving the four operations. Our new topic in Maths after half term will be fractions.

To consolidate learning of their Year 5 spellings, the children have been given a document with the spellings they have had sent home over the past few weeks to practice. If they show confidence with these words please can you encourage them to use these spellings in sentences to show they understand their meaning. They have also been set MyMaths, R.E homework, one piece of the Homework Pyramid and to continue BugClub to complete by 4th November. Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

Unfortunately, due to photos taking place in the Hall yesterday, Golden Leaf Assembly was not on. So, this week there are no Golden Leaves or Showstopper writing.

We want to say a big thank you to 5E and 5F for how well behaved, engaged and supportive they were during the 6C Day today. We think all the children enjoyed themselves and exhibited the 6C’s!

Have a wonderful half term,

The Year 5 team
