Friday 2nd November, 2018

Welcome to Mrs Wilson who started on Monday, covering Mrs Pike’s maternity leave.

This week in English we have started our Superheroes topic. Children have been exploring the features of persuasive writing and have been set the task of writing a persuasive speech, to persuade Marvel why their chosen superhero is the greatest of all. Children have been sent home with a task – to research their chosen superhero. This will help them when they write their speech. It is due in on Wednesday 7th November. In maths, we have been looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, looking at what happens to the place value of each digit. Check out the maths vlog below for an example of the short multiplication method, ready for next week.

**Please remember Reading Passports must be completed by Wednesday 21st November as the draw for Shrek: The Musical will take place on the 23rd.

This week Harry Woolston (5E) received the golden key award for supporting others with their learning. Isla Brown (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Bea Carter-Hall (5PC) received the golden key award for being a really welcoming member of the class for Mrs Wilson. Andrew Cordina (5PC) has his writing on the showstopper wall. Islwyn Mainwaring (5E) and Kian Marples (5CW) both received the Mathemagician of the Month.

Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy any firework events you may be attending.

Rousing Residential

A wonderful week has been had by all year 5 pupils on our residential trip to The Sustainability Centre. The children were exceptionally well-behaved and fully engaged with all tasks. They experienced a range of eco-friendly activities including; clay oven building, den creation, a night walk, a local farm visit, fire-building demonstrations and an eco-exploration of the site. The centre even linked some of their activities to our WWII topic, informing children about the history of the site which was a Naval communications building during the Second World War. A talk from one of the rangers gave children a chance to explore a wide variety of World War 2 artefacts and dance along to some jive music played on an original gramophone. The second night saw us all huddle around an open camp-fire where teachers were entertained with ‘jokes’, singing and dancing.

Thank you to all of the children for being excellent ambassadors for St Peter’s and for their curiosity and collaboration throughout their visit.

Next Friday during out celebration assembly, Year 5 will get the chance to talk about their experience with the rest of the school.

Photos to follow early next week – after we have caught up on some much needed sleep!

Have a restful weekend!

The Year 5 team.

Friday 5th October, 2018

This week in English we have been looking at figurative language with a particular focus on personification and similes. Children are preparing to write a sensory description on an image from ‘The Day War Came’ by Nicola Davies. In maths, they have been continuing to apply their understanding of addition and subtraction through routine and non-routine problems.

The spellings this week are ‘ible’ and ‘able’ words. Children have explored the rule where most words ending ‘able’ have a root sounding word before it. Spelling books will be expected in on Monday 15th October, ready for a test.

On Monday Year 5E will be heading off on their three day residential, 5PC leave on Wednesday. Don’t forget to arrive in your Sustainability clothing ready for the normal school time. Please remember to add in a small packet of biscuits or cakes for the trip.

**Please remember all medicines are to be handed to Mrs Edge on Monday and Mr Crozier on Wednesday.

This week Ben Lymer (5E) received the golden key award for being a super ambassador of St Peter’s, during open afternoon. Sihanua Sumba (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Isla Challis (5PC) received the golden key award for her always putting 100% effort into everything she does. Jacob Kurowski (5PC) has his writing on the showstopper wall.

Have an enjoyable weekend,

Some photos from the day

Friday 28th September, 2018

Yesterday Year 5 went back to 1939.

Thank you to parents and carers who helped the children to make our day such a fantastic success. The children dressed in World War II type clothing and completed their look with gas mask boxes, ID cards, ration cards and evacuation tags.

They spent the day learning about the role of propaganda during the war; designing their own evacuation posters while also experiencing an air raid! They were asked regularly, around school, to prove who they were by showing their identity cards or risk spending time being questioned by a policeman (played with gusto by Mr Cunningham).

At lunchtime, they had to use their ration coupons to collect their WWII lunch of corn beef hash with potatoes and carrots. Thank you to Mrs Gray and her team for providing the lunch and dressing in the style of 1940’s women. In the afternoon, the children played WWII games, sang songs from the era and even had a visitor who spoke to them about WWII artifacts. Jerome allowed the children to hold and wear equipment and also allowed them in the jeep from the era.

At the end of the day, parents came in to the hall to decide which evacuee they wanted to take home with them. It was a long wait for some children…

Friday 21st September, 2018

This week in, English, we have been looking at using fronted adverbials and identified the features of a diary before planning our diary entry, as an evacuee. In maths we have been exploring negative numbers in context, we then moved on to addition, showing different strategies for solving calculations. Next week we will be looking at formal subtraction strategies – don’t forget to use the maths booklet to help consolidate the learning in class.

The spellings this week are a continuation of silent letter words and your child has been sent home with instructions to make their own gas mask box ready for our WWII day on Thursday. They also have a piece of card to complete this task. Please remember that Thursday is a dress up day as a WWII evacuee.

Don’t forget our final meeting about the residential trip (Tuesday 25th September at 5pm). Please complete and return any medical forms by this date.

This week Seren Tricker (5E) received the golden key award for being a good friend and settling well in to life at St Peter’s. Amelia Morris (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Evie Mosely (5PC) received the golden key award for her excellent teamwork and for supporting her peers in class. Annie Woodings (5PC) has his writing on the showstopper wall.

As the weather is beginning to turn, please ensure your child has a coat.

Have a great weekend,

The Year 5 team

Friday 14th September 2018

Thank you to all the parents who made it to the welcome meeting on Wednesday. Information regarding the residential trip will go out early next week to include a final meeting date.

This week in English we have been continuing to explore the novel, Carrie’s War, focusing on the character of Mr Evans. Children have been practising the skill of writing expanded noun phrases and have begun to look at fronted adverbials again. In maths we have been rounding numbers up to 1 000 000 and applying these skills to solve problems.

Well done to the children who have completed their first spelling home learning task. New spellings were sent home today and will be due in next Friday. They have been looking at words with silent letters.

This week Archie Abraham (5E) received the golden key award for persevering with his mathematics, to improve his understanding. Benita Byju (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Ann Eldo (5T) received the golden key award for her fantastic school council presentation. Leon Hogan (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall.

Have a terrific weekend,
