4th may, 2018

This week in Maths the children have solved problems involving measures and started working on division. In English, they have finished their letter to Mrs May and are now planning a speech to persuade Marvel that their chosen superhero is the greatest ever created.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. In lessons this week children have broken down words into prefixes, root words and suffixes and started to proofread for mistakes with common exception words. They must carry on learning words from their personal spelling lists.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Tuesday next week, when another one will be sent home. Please don’t forget that children should be reading daily as well as practising spellings and Maths. The book review challenge was introduced yesterday and should encourage some quality reading. Children should always take home their weekly times tables and Testbase arithmetic tests. These should provide a good basis for homework.

This week in maths the children have been converting metric measures, for example ml to l, kg to g, using their understanding of place value. They have solved multi-step problems involving measures. In English, they have finished their superhero posters and are now considering whether superheroes are good role models.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. This week they have done more Year 3/ 4 revision and looked at commonly misspelled words. Children must carry on learning words from their personal spelling lists.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday, when another one will be sent home. All children should now have some creative homework ideas for our topic on Coasts. One piece should be submitted this half term, and personal research into coastal formation should be encouraged. Please don’t forget that children should be reading daily as well as practising spellings and maths.

This week Joseph Tyler (5E) received the golden leaf award for working hard in all areas of the curriculum. Charlie Cripps (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Millie Worrall (5T) received the golden leaf award for working hard and never giving up when faced by a challenge. Molly Perkins (5T) has her writing on the showstopper wall. Mathemagicians of the month were Gracie Tinsley-Jones, 5E, and Kyle Gardner, 5T.

Yesterday, several Year 5 children from the Prayer Garden group presented their ideas to governors and members of the Friends of St Peters. They successfully convinced both parties to contribute to our project – well done! Please look out for our fund-raising ideas in the not-too-distant future, and think of us if you have any surplus compost/bedding plants/perennials from your spring gardening. We would be grateful for any donations.

This week the children have been using their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages to solve problems. In English, they have started a new topic about superheroes in response to an advert from Marvel. We are learning about persuasive language and description.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. This week they are doing some specific Year 3/ 4 revision and have a list of the words given. Also, remind children to learn words from their personal spelling lists. Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday, when another one will be sent home.

This week Nathan Jose (5E) received the golden leaf award for being a really good role model and consistently working hard in all areas of the curriculum. Lillie Churcher (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Emma Mpario (5T) received the golden leaf award for being polite, helpful and responsible. Tia Abbinnett (5T) has her writing on the showstopper wall.

If the weather continues to be as glorious as it has been this week, please ensure your child has a hat and sunscreen. It is even more important than usual for them to have a named water bottle in school.

23rd March, 2018

This week the children have been working on numbers with up to three decimal places, ordering them on a number line and adding them. In English, they have been writing and editing their adventure stories and are almost ready to publish them.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Also help children to learn words containing ei or ie.

This week Orla Carey (5E) received the golden leaf award for always working hard and doing his best. Sophie Kidd (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Kristopher Baker (5T) received the golden leaf award for his effort and improvement in Maths. Nicolas Renji (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall too.

As Mr. Cunningham has written in his blog, several children from Year 5 accompanied him to Basingstoke yesterday to present our Prayer Garden plans to a panel of judges. They thoroughly enjoyed their day and came back feeling very proud of themselves. The rest of the group is looking forward to the opportunity to make a presentation to other groups of people who might help us raise funds.

Next Thursday is 5T’s last swimming lesson. The whole of Year 5 has enjoyed the swimming experience this term and it is very satisfying to see the progress made.

This week the children have been learning about multiplying fractions and mixed numbers and finding fractions of quantities. They have continued to show their understanding by drawing bar models and fraction walls. In English, they have been planning an adventure story using sentence techniques to create excitement and suspense.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Also, remind children to learn words from their personal spelling lists. Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday, when another one will be sent home.

This week, Sienna Tooes (5T) received the golden leaf award for consistently working hard to deliver class work and home learning. Troy Tyler (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall. Mrs Edge will catch up on her class when she returns to school.

This week the children have been learning about comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions. They have found equivalent fractions and simplified them and have remembered how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. They have been showing their understanding by drawing bar models and fraction walls. In English, they have been focusing on sentence work using modal verbs and learning about the rule of three.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Also, remind children to learn words from their personal spelling lists. Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday, when another one will be sent home.

This week Ethan Baker (5E) received the golden leaf award for being helpful and organised before school. Anna-Louise Heathcote (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Lily Tan (5T) received the golden leaf award for her effort and co-operation when working with other children. Lilli Zaczek (5T) has her writing on the showstopper wall.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our poetry competition this afternoon. Congratulations to Sam Mpario, Nicolas Renji and Lilli Zaczek for representing Year Five so well.

Friday 23rd February, 2018

This week the children have been consolidating their understanding of addition and subtraction using formal methods. They have also been solving word problems involving addition and subtraction facts before solving problems involving all four operations. Any extra practice would be helpful. In English, they have been creating poetic imagery with a space theme then writing their own space poem.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Also help children to consolidate the words that contain the grapheme that sounds like ‘sh’.

This week Alicia Lea (5E) received the golden leaf award for working hard to improve her understanding of word problems and increasing her work rate. Ethan Baker (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Fraya-Mai Humphrey (5T) received the golden leaf award for her improved effort and perseverance. Kyle Gardner and Kristopher Baker (5T) have their writing on the showstopper wall too.

5T really enjoyed their first swimming lesson. Please remember to send children with a hat and goggles if possible.

Winchester Science Museum

Friday 9th February, 2018

This week the children have been using a protractor to measure and draw angles. They have learnt about angles within a triangle and on a straight line as well as recapping their knowledge of different kinds of angle. Any extra practice would be helpful. In English, they have been publishing their persuasive pieces.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Also help children practise spellings that they use frequently and make mistakes with, for example their, there and they’re.

This week Elea Da Vos (5E) received the golden leaf award for working hard to improve her understanding and striving to always do her best. Sofia Machedon (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Isla Gray (5T) received the golden leaf award for consistent effort and a great attitude to learning. Alicia Richards (5T) has her writing on the showstopper wall too.

The children enjoyed their visit to the Winchester Science Museum this week. There were lots of hands-on activities for them to do and the planetarium was informative as well as entertaining.

Just a reminder that 5T will be having their swimming lessons every Thursday, starting after the half term holiday.
