Friday 21st September, 2018

This week in, English, we have been looking at using fronted adverbials and identified the features of a diary before planning our diary entry, as an evacuee. In maths we have been exploring negative numbers in context, we then moved on to addition, showing different strategies for solving calculations. Next week we will be looking at formal subtraction strategies – don’t forget to use the maths booklet to help consolidate the learning in class.

 

The spellings this week are a continuation of silent letter words and your child has been sent home with instructions to make their own gas mask box ready for our WWII day on Thursday. They also have a piece of card to complete this task. Please remember that Thursday is a dress up day as a WWII evacuee.

Don’t forget our final meeting about the residential trip (Tuesday 25th September at 5pm). Please complete and return any medical forms by this date.

Friday 14th September 2018

Thank you to all the parents who made it to the welcome meeting on Wednesday. Information regarding the residential trip will go out early next week to include a final meeting date.

 

This week in English we have been continuing to explore the novel, Carrie’s War, focusing on the character of Mr Evans. Children have been practising the skill of writing expanded noun phrases and have begun to look at fronted adverbials again. In maths we have been rounding numbers up to 1 000 000 and applying these skills to solve problems.

 

Well done to the children who have completed their first spelling home learning task. New spellings were sent home today and will be due in next Friday. They have been looking at words with silent letters.

Welcome to Year 5! Your children have made a fantastic start to the year, working hard and getting on with their learning immediately.

This week in Maths, the children have been recapping their understanding of place value with numbers up to 1 million. Please spend time with your child over the next week practicing reading numbers up to 1 million. They have started explore the novel Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden, looking particularly at the evacuation scenes.

This week your child has been sent home with a new spelling homework book. Children need to complete the tasks set by next Friday (14th Sept). They have also received a Reading Passport which requires them to read a wide variety of texts over the course of the term. Please encourage your child to complete this passport and read with them as much as possible. We will talk more about homework at our welcome meeting (Weds 12th at 4.15pm).

 

Just a reminder that there is still time to sign up for our exciting residential that begins on the 8th October.

This week the children have worked on understanding different types of triangles and different types of angles. They have been finding missing angles and measuring and drawing angles. In English, they have written a diary as an Egyptologist and will be editing and publishing this next week.

 

This week, Samuel Mpario (5E) received the golden leaf award for always working hard, showing perseverance when editing and being a lovely member of the class. George Gill (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Andrew Jones (5T) received the golden leaf award for great effort in maths group work. Millen Long (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall too.

 

The children had a morning of transition today. They will have another transition afternoon on Monday. They are bringing home a slip of paper stating who their new teacher will be.

Friday 29th June, 2018

This week the children have worked on solving problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages. In English, they have started to think like Egyptologists in preparation for some diary writing.

We have completed our tests and will use some of the next three weeks to revisit and consolidate some areas of learning.

This has been a very busy week with two lessons of fencing, test papers and the St Peter and Saint Paul Feast Day Mass. Next Monday will be our final fencing lesson. Both coaches have been very impressed by their enthusiasm and skills.

Some children, who attend Sacred Heart Church and are members of the Prayer Garden Group, have taken a letter inviting them to volunteer to speak after Mass to the congregation in the hope of raising more funds. If you think your child would enjoy this opportunity and you would be prepared to take them to church on the 14th or 15th July, please ask your child to request a letter. It is not limited to the Prayer Garden Group.

This week Eve Banham (5E) received the golden leaf award for always working hard and being a kind member of the class. Sienna Brown (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Franklin Horton (5T) received the golden leaf award for great effort and concentration. Nicolas Renji (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall too. Mathemagicians of the Month were Elea De Vos (5E) and Dominic Lethbridge (5T).

This week in Maths, the children have been learning to divide fractions by whole numbers. They have also completed some mathematics tests which will continue next week, along with reading and SPaG tests.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. Children have also taken home the words for the Year 5 St Peter’s Fest song. This week has been particularly busy for Year 5. On Tuesday we went to church and led the worship about the gifts of the Holy Spirit – many thanks to all of the parents who accompanied us on our walk. On Wednesday we all enjoyed an active sports day and we’ve had two lessons of fencing this week. This morning we received a visit from Father Jeremy to discuss the Sacraments and Holy Orders in particular.

This week Sienna Brown (5E) received the golden leaf award for improving her mathematics knowledge and being a good friend. Hannah Maple (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. This week in Maths, the children have been learning to multiply fractions by whole numbers. In English, they have enjoyed working on the Scarab’s Secret and studied texts about Ancient Egypt.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. We are now nearly at the end of Year 5 so children should be secure with the Year 3/4 list and well on their way with the Year 5/6 list. Children should make sure they know the rules for making nouns plural, especially words ending in ‘y’.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning.

  • There is only one more week to complete any book reviews.
  • A letter went home this week about the Year 5 and 6 Mass next Tuesday (19th June). Please could you return your slips by Monday, if you are able to help walk the children to and from church. We need extra adults or we will be unable to attend Mass.

This week in Maths, the children have been practicing their skills in Geometry translating and reflecting shapes. In English, they have been collecting vocabulary about Ancient Egypt, described different scenes and written what they would see and how they would feel if they were archaeologists entering an undiscovered tomb.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Children should have a list of personal spellings in their home learning diary from the Year 5/6 list or the ones given to them. Some children know that they need to practice spelling plural words including irregular ones.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning.

The children enjoyed some STEM work today, looking at how we could try to clean dirty water for drinking. They had to decide what material(s) would work best at filtering the dirty water before experimenting with their ideas.

This week in Maths, the children have consolidated different methods of multiplication and division through problem solving. In English, they have finished their unit on superheroes.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Children should have a list of personal spellings in their home learning diary. In preparation for next week children need to look at ie and ei words and forming the past tense.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning. The book review challenge has already produced a lot of responses from Year 5. It was a pleasure to see so many children receiving their first award during Celebration Assembly.

This week in Maths, the children have started to consolidate different methods of multiplication and division, including some problem solving. In English, they have finished their plan for a speech to persuade Marvel that their chosen superhero is the greatest ever created and are now writing a draft.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Children should have a list of personal spellings in their home learning diary. Next week we will be looking again at homophones so some revision would be useful preparation.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning. The book review challenge has already produced a lot of responses from Year 5. Please encourage your children to take part and make sure that they read daily. Children should have brought home their Friday Testbase arithmetic tests today. These should provide a good basis for homework.
