In maths this week children have continued their work on fractions with a focus on adding and subtracting and exploring improper fractions and mixed numbers. Next week we will be finding fractions of different amounts. Please check out the pre-teach video on the maths blog over the weekend as it will help prepare children for Monday’s lesson.

In English we have started our new topic on persuasive writing. Children will be writing persuasive leaflets convincing Tim Peake to visit Pandora.

All children should be well underway with their spring reading passport. Those who complete the challenge will be entered into a draw where two pupils from each class will be chosen to enjoy an afternoon at Rock Up in Whitley.

Poetry booklets have also gone home this week. Please help your child chose a poem to learn off by heart.

On Tuesday of this week Year 5 travelled to Sacred Heart for a whole school Advent service. Many thanks to all the parents who helped walk the children to and from school. Well done to all of the children who took part in our service.

Our lessons in maths this week have continued to focus on decimal numbers. Children have applied their understanding of place value to help them solve a range of routine and non-routine problems.

In English we have been exploring different sentence structures to help develop our story writing skills. Next week children will begin applying these new skills through more extended pieces of writing.

Today in class we all became scientists as part of our first STEM day of the year. We spent the day looking at the filtration of water before children worked in groups to design and make their own water filtration system using a range of materials. Another busy week in Year 5. On Monday 5CW led whole school worship, demonstrating the effects of bullying through drama. Their powerful performance marked the second week of our focus on anti-bullying. Well done to all for taking to the stage to share their message to the rest of the school.

We visited Fort Nelson on Thursday where we became spies for the day. Although cold, the children had a marvellous time finding the clues and filming/ taking photographs with I-Pods. Later they had to decide the best way to enter the fort undetected, blow up the ammunition and then escape.

Children have completed their persuasive speeches in English, which we will be sending off to Marvel Headquarters next week. Next week in maths we are moving on to look at decimal numbers.

Well done to all children who completed their reading Passports on time. Congratulations Sihanua, Joshua S, Aki and Henry, who were picked at random during assembly this morning. They will be going to see Shrek: The Musical on the 6th December.
