Exercise fun!
Today we had one of our regular STEM days where Year 5 focused on the Science aspect. We investigated the question ‘Does exercise affect heart rate?’. After making our predictions, we then took our resting pulse rate before completing a series of physical activities. Then we measured our pulse rate again. We looked at the impact the exercise had on our pulse rate and the reasons why this might be.
We also completed a shadow investigation throughout the day; measuring the length of a shadow every hour and observing the direction and length of the shadow.
For both activities we have recorded our results and then used them to create bar charts and line graphs.
Well done to Josh Smith, Seren Tricker (5E), Kieran Cheung and Esther Burrows (5CW) who won the opportunity to take part in some amazing science at Oaklands due to completing their Reading Challenge Passport.
**Reminder – it’s our rescheduled sports day on Monday. The children should have their PE kits from school. They can wear their house colours too. The children can wear their PE kits for the full day. Please remember to apply suncream (if needed), provide a named hat and water bottle.
On Tuesday, we will be celebrating our Feast day Mass at school.
Carnival Fever
Friday saw Year 5 take part in our very first St Peter’s Countries of the World carnival! Pupils had the opportunity to dress in traditional Indian clothing or the colours of the Indian flag, many had face paints applied (a skill that the adults in Year 5 didn’t know they had!) and all had the chance to show off the amazing work that they have completed as a result of our study of India! A huge well done to all of the children for individually working on their Indian animal non-chronological reports and for their fantastic team work and collaboration skills in creating a huge class tourist information brochure on this great country. They also got to perform two Indian dances; a traditional dance and a Bollywood routine – even Mrs Edge and Mr Crozier got their groove on! The staff in Year 5 are extremely proud of the hard work and effort that all of the pupils put into preparing for this carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who helped the children with their outfits for Friday and for all of you who came along to cheer on and celebrate the children’s efforts.
Photos to follow.
Year 5
Friday 14th June
Preparations are well underway for our carnival next Friday. Children have been working in teams to create their tourist brochure about different aspects of India ready to share with you. The dance workshop has now been rescheduled for next Tuesday and children will be performing their routine at the carnival. Please remember that children should arrive in school next Friday in either traditional Indian clothing or dressed in the colours of India. If they could also bring a bottle for our St Peter’s Fest, we would really appreciate it.
Alongside this, in English children have now started to write their Indian animal non-chronological reports and we hope that these will be completed by the carnival date also.
Thank you to all of the parents who helped walk with the children to and from mass on Tuesday and thank you to all of those who came along to celebrate the Pentecost mass with us.
Reminder: we are currently collecting toiletry items for the Apostleship of the Sea charity. Any small items would be much appreciated.
Word level, spellings and Sumdog home learning has all been set and given out today.
Have a great weekend – let’s hope the sun comes out!
Year 5 team.
Friday 7th June 2019
The final half term of this academic year has seen children learning about the properties of 3-D shapes where they have explored how different nets can be created using a range of 2-D shapes. In English children have taken their notes from their research on Indian animals and have begun to look at how they can use this knowledge to create a non-chronological report.
Next week we have our Year 5 and 6 Pentecost mass at Sacred Heart Church. We do hope that you can join us for this celebration on Tuesday at 10:30am. Thank you to those parents who have offered to walk with us to and from the church. If you are interested in helping us accompany the children to the mass please get in touch as soon as possible.
Children are working in teams to research one of seven topics linked to India with the aim of producing a travel brochure about this country. Again, if you can offer your services to help children learn more about India please get in touch. This could be coming in and talking to the children about Indian traditions, reading a folk-tale, a cooking demonstration of a simple Indian dish or sharing Indian artefacts such as clothing or jewellery.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Year 5 team.
Goodbye Egypt, hello India!
This week saw the children complete their Ancient Egypt topic and begin their study of India. Please make sure you read the letter that went home with your child earlier in the week regarding the topic and the carnival, which takes place on the 21st June.
In English the children completed their internal monologues based on Little Freak. Our new topic, after half term, is about animals native to India. Your child has been set half term homework where they must choose one of the six animals provided and research facts about the habitat, behaviour and diet of their chosen animal. This must be handed in on the first day back as children will need it for their written work.
In maths we have started to look at shape, making links to properties and angles. Please get children to check their Sumdog accounts as maths homework has been set.
Have a lovely, restful half term break!
The Year 5 Team
Friday 17th May, 2019
In Maths we have been looking at different types of triangles and finding missing angles within them. We have also been using a protractor to measure angles on a straight line and within triangles. At the end of the week we were using our knowledge of the properties of shapes, including their angles to sort into a Carroll diagram.
We have continued working on using different sentence structures and emotive language within English to help write a monologue from the point of view of Little Freak, the character.
We’ve been incredibly lucky this week with extra activities laid on for Year 5. On Thursday afternoon we had a visit from the school nursing team, who led a workshop about healthy eating and sugar content in food. The children weighed cereals, scanned the sugar content in drinks and packaging, saw what excess sugar does to your body and tried a wide variety of healthy snacks. We also had a small drama workshop today, where the children took part in some dance moves, singing and freeze framing of different scenes.
This week, Benita Byju (5E) received the golden key award for always working to the best of her ability and for being a lovely member of the class. Seren Tricker (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. James Riggs (5CW) received the golden key award for being quick thinking and helpful. Leon Hogan (5CW) has his writing on the showstopper writing wall.
Have a super weekend,
The Year 5 team
