Olympic Week

As it is Olympic week next week, we would love to hear about all the different sports the children take part in and celebrate their successes. We will be having a presentation afternoon as a year group on Wednesday where the children can bring in any certificates, medals or pieces of writing about their sports. We can’t wait to hear about the different sports children do in and outside of school!

As a reminder, it is also sports day next Thursday afternoon which will start at 13:00. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Crookhorn 100 Years of Britain and Open day

On Tuesday 15th March a group of year 5 students were selected to play and act at Crookhorn College. Harriet, Megan, Claudia, Rosie, Coral, Reuben, Owen, Noah and William Wilkinson played an act from the 1940’s. We practiced a lot beforehand and we were great on the stage on the day. We all had fun practicing and taking part in the event and we loved it so much that we are doing it again on Tuesday in school. Mrs Siou was our drama teacher and we would like to thank her for everything that she has done to help us have such a wonderful time.
We are looking forward to next Tuesday.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Spelling:

In Year Five this week we have been focussing on our tricky words. These include words that have different sounds to how they are spelt or have double letters. We have also focussed on synonyms for the tricky words using dictionaries to find their definition. For homework this week children will be able to consolidate the spelling of these words. If children are confident in spelling them they could extend themselves by using a dictionary to find other words that are tricky in the same way.

Times Tables:  We have a times tables test every Friday. If there is a times table the children need to practice, we will send them home with a sheet to support them and practice for the next test.

Abacus:  There will also be plenty of online maths homework set to keep them busy over half term.

New Topic: We are looking forward to  starting our new topic of ‘World at War’ next half term with year 5. If they want to get a head start on the topic they could complete some prior research on WW1 and WW2 over half term.

We hope you have a lovely half term!

Runways End

What a fantastic week year 5 have had! I’m sure they all came home exhausted after the fun filled and activity packed few days they had at Runways End. We had a brilliant week gaining skill, confidence and some of us tackled some of our fears (the teachers definitely tackled a few fears!)  in the different activities. We took part in abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, archery, and the list goes on. We hope they have gained memories that will last for a lifetime.

Thank you to all of the parent helpers involved, including Mrs Parnum, Mr Barclay, Mr Phillips and Miss Dove.

Weekly Home Learning

Spelling:

This week we have been focussing on using spelling rules to spell words with the suffix ‘cial’ and ‘tial’, such as official.

Children can practise the words that they didn’t get right at home this week in our test.  The spelling sheet is given out each Friday afternoon and is stuck in home learning books.

However, If you scored 15/15 on the recent spelling test, use the dictionary to find trickier words with this suffix or try and write a sentence using your spellings.

This will be checked the following Friday.

Times Tables:

Times tables are a massive focus during this current year. Children will bring home a multiplication sheet with a particular times table they have struggled with. Children can practise these ready for next weeks multiplication challenge which take place every Friday afternoon.

We are looking forward to seeing the progression the children are making in their current spellings and multiplication.

Thank you so much for your support at home.

Welcome back year 5!

Welcome back year 5!

We have had a great start to the school year and the children have already settled well into the routines of year 5 and their new classes. It has been lovely to see everything the children have been up to over the holidays in their summer learning books and we’ve been really impressed with the amount of effort they have put into their books. They are now in our class libraries for everyone to see!

We have started our new topic ‘Ancient Egypt’ and the children are really excited to find out more about Egyptian Gods and Goddesses and to create their own cartouche’s. We have created a home learning pyramid to give the children ideas about what they could do at home. We have given these to the children but we have also attached it below to make sure everyone has a copy.

The children are still expected to read regularly at home/BugClub and complete Abacus activities regularly. We have updated BugClub and Abacus so the children can get started!

We will also be sending spellings home for the children to learn every Friday, starting next week Friday 18th September.

Thank you to those of you who were able to come to the welcome evening last week. For those of you who were unable to make it, we have attached a copy of the powerpoint we used.

Home Learning

Thank you to all the children who brought in their home learning for our Ancient Egypt topic last half term. We have seen some amazing models, power points and fact files showing excellent commitment to learning at home.

This half term year 5 will be investigating coasts in the UK and around the world. The children will be using mapping skills, learning about erosion and deposition and how they can sustain our coasts and much more!

They have received home learning pyramids (attached below) in line with this topic and RE focussing on our current unit of Easter. They should choose at least one of the activities to complete by the 22nd of May (the last day of term).

We look forward to seeing what home learning year 5 bring in!
