Challenge Activities:

This bottle contains one litre of concentrated blackcurrant squash. It is also available in ‘double concentrated strength’, in 1.5 litre bottles.

According to the manufacturer, how many drinks can be made, on average, from this bottle?

  1. A ‘serving’ of diluted squash is considered to be 250ml.

How much of this will be concentrated squash if we follow the manufacturer’s guidelines?

What fraction of each drink will be water?

2. The 1 litre bottles of squash cost £1.49 each. I need to make 12 litres of diluted blackcurrant squash.

How much will I need to spend on concentrated squash?

3. Only half the amount of ‘double concentrated strength’ squash is needed.

How many drinks would one litre of this make?

How much water would I need?

English Work for Friday27th November – Tuesday 1st December

https://www.pobble365.com/wonder-anti-bullying/    (link to the online page)

To link with the text ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio and Anti-bullying Week, we have set the following activities for the last three days of lockdown home learning. Submit your final story by Tuesday 1st November by 4pm.

Friday 27th November

Please complete the following two activities.

  1. Question time!

How would you describe bullying?

How do you feel when you hear all of the things Auggie has said?

How do you think Auggie feels? What makes you think this?

If you knew Auggie, what would you do to help and comfort him?

If you thought you were being bullied, how would you deal with it?

If you thought someone else was being bullied, how would you deal with it?

Why do you think some people bully others?

Make a list of all the things that make you special.

2.  Perfect picture!

Imagine you see someone being bullied at home or at school. Draw a picture showing their thoughts and feelings or create a short comic strip, showing how they feel and somebody helping them.

Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December

Please complete the following activities over these two days.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

We walked to school. People stared at me. I felt sad.

Story starter!

This week is ‘Anti-Bullying Week.’ Rather than a story starter, here is a quote from Wonder by R.J. Palacio, chapter Ordinary: ‘I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an Xbox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at wherever they go. If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing. Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.’

From chapter The War: ‘Before she went out, she looked left and right outside of the door to make sure no one saw her leaving. I guess even though she was neutral, she didn’t want to be seen with me.’

Imagine you are the boy. Using the information from the quotes, write a story that continues from this point. What happens next after you have introduced yourself to your reader?

Write in first person (I, we) or third person (she,he,it) if you are talking about another character.

Sentence challenge!

Use a series of rhetorical questions in your writing but remember to use a question mark.

E.g. Will they ever stop staring at me? Why do I have to be so different? Is there anyone who can help?

Reading – Week 2

Over the next 3 working days (Friday, Monday & Tuesday), we would like you to catch up with reading the books on your Reading Passport Challenge as this is due by the 10th December.

Also, you could catch up with any reading needed for the Year 5 ‘Must Reads’.

** Remember, you only have to read 2 for this term.

All 6 books are to be spread across the whole of Year 5.

If you have any unfinished reading activities from’ There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’, this needs to be completed first.

P4C for next Wednesday, on your return.

Don’t forget, you also have any Geography, RE, Science, Spelling or French work to complete too.
