Challenge Activities:

This bottle contains one litre of concentrated blackcurrant squash. It is also available in ‘double concentrated strength’, in 1.5 litre bottles.

According to the manufacturer, how many drinks can be made, on average, from this bottle?

  1. A ‘serving’ of diluted squash is considered to be 250ml.

How much of this will be concentrated squash if we follow the manufacturer’s guidelines?

What fraction of each drink will be water?

2. The 1 litre bottles of squash cost £1.49 each. I need to make 12 litres of diluted blackcurrant squash.

How much will I need to spend on concentrated squash?

3. Only half the amount of ‘double concentrated strength’ squash is needed.

How many drinks would one litre of this make?

How much water would I need?

English Work for Friday27th November – Tuesday 1st December

https://www.pobble365.com/wonder-anti-bullying/    (link to the online page)

To link with the text ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio and Anti-bullying Week, we have set the following activities for the last three days of lockdown home learning. Submit your final story by Tuesday 1st November by 4pm.

Friday 27th November

Please complete the following two activities.

  1. Question time!

How would you describe bullying?

How do you feel when you hear all of the things Auggie has said?

How do you think Auggie feels? What makes you think this?

If you knew Auggie, what would you do to help and comfort him?

If you thought you were being bullied, how would you deal with it?

If you thought someone else was being bullied, how would you deal with it?

Why do you think some people bully others?

Make a list of all the things that make you special.

2.  Perfect picture!

Imagine you see someone being bullied at home or at school. Draw a picture showing their thoughts and feelings or create a short comic strip, showing how they feel and somebody helping them.

Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December

Please complete the following activities over these two days.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

We walked to school. People stared at me. I felt sad.

Story starter!

This week is ‘Anti-Bullying Week.’ Rather than a story starter, here is a quote from Wonder by R.J. Palacio, chapter Ordinary: ‘I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an Xbox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at wherever they go. If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing. Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.’

From chapter The War: ‘Before she went out, she looked left and right outside of the door to make sure no one saw her leaving. I guess even though she was neutral, she didn’t want to be seen with me.’

Imagine you are the boy. Using the information from the quotes, write a story that continues from this point. What happens next after you have introduced yourself to your reader?

Write in first person (I, we) or third person (she,he,it) if you are talking about another character.

Sentence challenge!

Use a series of rhetorical questions in your writing but remember to use a question mark.

E.g. Will they ever stop staring at me? Why do I have to be so different? Is there anyone who can help?

Reading – Week 2

Over the next 3 working days (Friday, Monday & Tuesday), we would like you to catch up with reading the books on your Reading Passport Challenge as this is due by the 10th December.

Also, you could catch up with any reading needed for the Year 5 ‘Must Reads’.

** Remember, you only have to read 2 for this term.

All 6 books are to be spread across the whole of Year 5.

If you have any unfinished reading activities from’ There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’, this needs to be completed first.

P4C for next Wednesday, on your return.

Don’t forget, you also have any Geography, RE, Science, Spelling or French work to complete too.

French Project

As Madam’s powerpoint won’t upload, we’ve split each page into a picture. The pictures are in the same order as the the powerpoint.

Additional Spellings and Geography

Spellings that we have covered this term.

Using a variety of the spelling strategies, go through the different spellings that we have been learning throughout the term.

Words with ‘ough’ letter pattern

Spelling word How it sounds
Through Th – roo (long oo digraph)
Rough R – uff (short ‘u’ sound as in umbrella)
Dough D – oh (The vowel says it’s name not it’s sound)
Thought Th – or – t (the ‘or’ digraph as in ‘for’)
Plough Pl – ow ( the ‘ow’ digraph as in ‘cow’.)

Silent letter words

doubt Plus any others you can remember / think of to practise.
environment
February
thistle
island
solemn

Plurals

Cups Sheep
Bushes Potatoes
Cities Parties
Monkeys Radios

What other plurals can you think of?

-able and –ible words

Think about what the rule is for adding –ible or –able.

Homophones

Using a hyphen with the prefixes co and re

Use of the apostrophe for contractions or to show possession:

Contractions For possession
Could not – couldn’t The lions roar. – the lion’s roar
Can not The cats ball.
Should not The lorrys load.
It is Williams uncle.
Will not The dogs dinner.
Has not Freds apples and oranges.
She is I hope the dogs bark will not wake the neighbours baby.

Modal verbs showing a level of possibility.

Put these modal verbs in to sentences to show their level of possibility:

could may
won’t must not
ought will
must should not

Etymology – finding the origin of a word.

‘She chucked a banana, chocolate and a cardigan into her duffel bag

Using a dictionary, find out where the underlined words originated.

What words have got an origin that you found unexpected? (Remember ‘ketchup’ originating from Cantonese/ Chinese and being surprised?)

Year 5/6 spelling list

Finally, it’s always a good idea to go over the Year 5/6 list as often as you can.

Geography Work

Pick a country of your choice and use an atlas or Google maps to tell me about the country. You need to use your observational skills for this fieldwork. It must have a key to name the symbols you have drawn in.

It does not have to be an exact outline of your country (see my example!) as it is all about you using your map skills.

You could add in mountain ranges, rivers, surrounding countries, seas/oceans, lakes, lines of longitude and latitude, rivers, any information your atlas tells you.

What do you notice about your country compared to the UK? (E.g. France is about 2.5 times bigger than the UK. France has many countries surrounding it while the UK is an island, etc.)

Additional Science Learning Activity – Due 1st December

https://learning.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/SMG-Learning-Activities-Make-It-Fly.pdf

(Helicopter template available to print. If no printer then copy the template with a pencil and a ruler onto a piece of paper or card.

You have until Tuesday 1st December to complete these activities. Upload a photo to Teams or send to your class email.

Extension Challenge:

·       Can you change the shape of your plane so that is stays in the air longer? Which designs work better to achieve this?

·       Does using a different type of paper or material affect the time spent airborne.

·       Does changing the size of the hoops or length of the straw keep the glider in the air longer?

Record what happens during your investigations. This can be done by:

·       Drawing and labelling a diagram of your results.

·       Creating a table to show how many seconds each design stays in the air.

·       Taking a video of you completing the investigations with you adding scientific commentary as to what you found out.

Bring this in to school on Wednesday 2nd December for your next investigation in science on that afternoon.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – HOME LEARNING UNIT

Topic: Advent

Please note this work is designed to cover a two-week period.

Activity Resources
Look at Busted Halo Video introducing the Season of Advent

From the Busted Halo video write down 4 things you will try to do better during Advent to help you prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas, and two things you will try not to do.  Turn your list into a prayer.

Busted Halo ‘Advent in 2 minutes’

Create own Jesse Tree (studied in Year 4) by using a table top Christmas tree, branch, piece of string with clothes pegs, or simply by drawing and illustrating one.  Take a photo to place in your book.

Take one character from the Jesse Tree and write about why they inspire you and what message they have for people today.

Research the Jesse Tree, e.g. The Jesse Tree (Loyola Press) – recommended ,

Catholicinspired.com

Catholicculture.org

Take each theme for the four weeks of Advent – Hope, Peace, Joy and Love and

–          Select a relevant Scripture reading

–          Write a prayer linked to the theme/reading

–          Create a symbol (2D or 3D)

Use to pray with your family at an appropriate time during Advent.

Access to Bible
One of the characters on the Jesse Tree is Joseph.

Read/watch/listen to the Christmas story up to the point when Mary and Joseph arrive at the stable.  Focus on the role of Joseph.

Create a timeline/journey for Joseph from when Mary first told him of the events of the Annunciation to their settling in at the stable.

For each point on the timeline, complete the following:

§  What might Joseph be thinking?

§  What might Joseph be feeling?

§  What question(s) would you ask Joseph at this point?

§  What might we learn from Joseph’s actions?

Find suitable clip online

Access to Bible

Using the above, create a ‘Joseph’s Stations’ using PowerPoint or similar.  If this is not possible then use your own drawings and writing for each station.  One slide for each point on the journey, plus an introductory and concluding slide.  Last slide to be a prayer.

Think about the background/picture for each slide, what questions will you pose for those taking part to reflect upon, will you use background music, what message(s) do you want to try and get across?

If possible, use the worship with your family.

Additional Activity

Research one of the following saints whose feast days are celebrated during Advent, compile a brief fact file, and then complete the relevant activity.

3rd December       –              St Francis Xavier – Brought the Gospel to India, Borneo, Indonesia and Japan.  Write a letter, email or card to someone sharing your favourite Bible story.

4th December       –              St John Damascene – wrote hymns.  Write a hymn to a tune you know, with one verse for each of the four themes of Advent.

7th December       –              St Ambrose – Showed he was prepared to challenge.  Look through a newspaper or the news.  Where do you see injustice?  Write a letter raising awareness to share with your class.

8th December       –              Immaculate Conception – Write an Act of Contrition.  Prepare a poster explaining why it is good to go to Confession during Advent.

12th December     –              Our Lady of Guadalupe – Write a prayer asking her help with a situation or person who needs to know God is close to them.

14th December     –              St John of the Cross – Draw a cross.  Decorate it with scenes from scripture stories from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus.

How We Used To Live

Year 5 went back to 1939.

We dressed in World War II type clothing and completed our look with gas mask boxes, ID cards, ration cards and evacuation tags.

We spent the day learning about the role of propaganda during the war; designing our own evacuation posters while also experiencing an air raid or two! We were asked regularly to prove who we were by showing our identity cards or risk spending time being questioned by a policeman (played with gusto by Mr Cunningham).

At lunchtime, we had to use our ration coupons to collect our WWII lunch of corn beef hash with potatoes and carrots. Mrs Gray and her team provided the lunch and dressed in the style of 1940’s women. In the afternoon, we played a variety of WWII games.

At the end of the day, parents came in to the ‘evacuation hall’ to decide which evacuee they wanted to take home with them. It was a long wait for some of us…

The Power of Persuasion

This week in English children have written, edited and published their persuasive speech detailing who the greatest superhero is. In maths, we have started our new fractions and decimals unit. The children have looked at unit fractions, explored fractions of shapes and amounts, and started to find equivalent fractions.

Today we had a History Deep Learning Day, where we explored the role of women during World War II. The children looked at various photographs and tried to work out the jobs that women held during the war. They then researched a variety of jobs that were open to women before making a recommendation about the best job for Edith, our fictional job seeker.

** Don’t forget that Tuesday is our Evacuation Day. Children need to remember to come dressed as an evacuee and bring their gas mask box. At the end of the day we will seat children in rows on the playground as if they were waiting to be chosen by their new host family. Feel free to arrive from 2:50pm onwards to choose the evacuee you’d like to take home with you!

Home Learning:

In their yellow Home Reading Journal children need to write a review of the book they are reading/ a book they have read. This is due on Thursday19th November. Parents will need to sign off book reviews to show that children have completed the review task and have spoken about what has happened in the book, their favourite parts/characters, etc.

This week children have been set some maths homework on Sumdog as well as a multiplication test, spelling work and new vocabulary homework. This is due Thursday 12th November.

As part of an individual choice of home learning, they also have their creative homework task ideas for the autumn term– one piece should be completed each half term. As the first half term is now complete, children should begin on their second piece of home learning of their choice to share after half term.

Reading Passport and Year 5 Must Reads:

Keep up the great work with reading the books from the reading passport. The children who complete their passport will be put into a draw for the chance to see Pinocchio at the theatre. Also, the class with the most completed entries get to have a complete afternoon of sport with CM Sports. It’s all to play for!!!

As we are coming to the end of the first half term, the children should have been able to read or be reading one of the year group must reads. This is important for Year 5 children to hear quality vocabulary that they will be exposed to in upper primary school to also to prepare them for secondary school.

** Reminders – it’s week 1 after half term which means PE lessons will be on Wednesday 11th November.  Children should come to school wearing their PE kit.

As the weather begins to turn colder and wetter, please remember children will need a coat to keep warm and dry. Break time snacks will be kept in the classroom until break time so they need to be kept separately from lunchboxes that children can unpack easily in the morning. They will not be able to access their lunchboxes until lunchtime.

Enjoy the first weekend of Lockdown2,

The Year 5 team.
