Monthly Archives: November, 2018

Friday 23rd November, 2018

Another busy week in Year 5. On Monday 5CW led whole school worship, demonstrating the effects of bullying through drama. Their powerful performance marked the second week of our focus on anti-bullying. Well done to all for taking to the stage to share their message to the rest of the school.

On Tuesday the children had a trip to church for the Year 5 and 6 Mass. Well done to the children of 5E, who read beautifully. Thank you to all the parents who helped walk the children to and from the church.

We visited Fort Nelson on Thursday where we became spies for the day. Although cold, the children had a marvellous time finding the clues and filming/ taking photographs with I-Pods. Later they had to decide the best way to enter the fort undetected, blow up the ammunition and then escape.

Children have completed their persuasive speeches in English, which we will be sending off to Marvel Headquarters next week. Next week in maths we are moving on to look at decimal numbers.

Well done to all children who completed their reading Passports on time. Congratulations Sihanua, Joshua S, Aki and Henry, who were picked at random during assembly this morning. They will be going to see Shrek: The Musical on the 6th December.

Have a super weekend,

The Year 5 team

This week in English we have been writing our persuasive speeches, persuading Marvel to choose our superhero as the greatest ever. In maths, we have been looking at dividing 3 and 4-digit numbers by 1-digit and solving word problems involving division.

Spelling homework went out this week with emphasis on words that use hyphens with prefixes. There will be a test next Friday (23rd), when the homework books should be handed in.

You are welcome to join us for our Years 5 and 6 Mass next Tuesday. If anyone can help with walking the children there and back it would be appreciated.

Another reminder: forms for Fort Nelson need to be returned by Monday ready for Thursday’s visit.

**Please remember Reading Passports must be completed by Wednesday 21st November as the draw for Shrek: The Musical will take place on the 23rd.

Next week we will be teaching the short method for solving division calculations (3 and 4-digit numbers by 1-digit). Check out the vlog with Mr Crozier demonstrating the short method, on the new maths blog.

Spelling homework will go out on Monday.

Friday 2nd November, 2018

Welcome to Mrs Wilson who started on Monday, covering Mrs Pike’s maternity leave.

This week in English we have started our Superheroes topic. Children have been exploring the features of persuasive writing and have been set the task of writing a persuasive speech, to persuade Marvel why their chosen superhero is the greatest of all. Children have been sent home with a task – to research their chosen superhero. This will help them when they write their speech. It is due in on Wednesday 7th November. In maths, we have been looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, looking at what happens to the place value of each digit. Check out the maths vlog below for an example of the short multiplication method, ready for next week.

**Please remember Reading Passports must be completed by Wednesday 21st November as the draw for Shrek: The Musical will take place on the 23rd.

This week Harry Woolston (5E) received the golden key award for supporting others with their learning. Isla Brown (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall.
