Monthly Archives: June, 2018

Friday 29th June, 2018

This week the children have worked on solving problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages. In English, they have started to think like Egyptologists in preparation for some diary writing.

We have completed our tests and will use some of the next three weeks to revisit and consolidate some areas of learning.

This has been a very busy week with two lessons of fencing, test papers and the St Peter and Saint Paul Feast Day Mass. Next Monday will be our final fencing lesson. Both coaches have been very impressed by their enthusiasm and skills.

Some children, who attend Sacred Heart Church and are members of the Prayer Garden Group, have taken a letter inviting them to volunteer to speak after Mass to the congregation in the hope of raising more funds. If you think your child would enjoy this opportunity and you would be prepared to take them to church on the 14th or 15th July, please ask your child to request a letter. It is not limited to the Prayer Garden Group.

This week Eve Banham (5E) received the golden leaf award for always working hard and being a kind member of the class. Sienna Brown (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Franklin Horton (5T) received the golden leaf award for great effort and concentration. Nicolas Renji (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall too. Mathemagicians of the Month were Elea De Vos (5E) and Dominic Lethbridge (5T).

Have a wonderful warm weekend,

The Year 5 team.

This week in Maths, the children have been learning to divide fractions by whole numbers. They have also completed some mathematics tests which will continue next week, along with reading and SPaG tests.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. Children have also taken home the words for the Year 5 St Peter’s Fest song. The link to the version we are singing is http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Feeling+Hot+Hot+Hot+Arrow+Song+Lyrics&adlt=strict&view=detail&mid=D2F56D4E49B8ABF0626FD2F56D4E49B8ABF0626F&&FORM=VRDGAR

This week has been particularly busy for Year 5. On Tuesday we went to church and led the worship about the gifts of the Holy Spirit – many thanks to all of the parents who accompanied us on our walk. On Wednesday we all enjoyed an active sports day and we’ve had two lessons of fencing this week. This morning we received a visit from Father Jeremy to discuss the Sacraments and Holy Orders in particular.

This week Sienna Brown (5E) received the golden leaf award for improving her mathematics knowledge and being a good friend. Hannah Maple (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Troy Tyler (5T) received the golden leaf award for improved effort and achievement. Kristopher Baker (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall.

Have a relaxing weekend,

The Year 5 team

Friday 15th June, 2018

This week in Maths, the children have been learning to multiply fractions by whole numbers. In English, they have enjoyed working on the Scarab’s Secret and studied texts about Ancient Egypt.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. We are now nearly at the end of Year 5 so children should be secure with the Year 3/4 list and well on their way with the Year 5/6 list. Children should make sure they know the rules for making nouns plural, especially words ending in ‘y’.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning.

Reminders

  • There is only one more week to complete any book reviews.
  • A letter went home this week about the Year 5 and 6 Mass next Tuesday (19th June). Please could you return your slips by Monday, if you are able to help walk the children to and from church. We need extra adults or we will be unable to attend Mass.

This week Kafui Djokey (5E) received the golden leaf award for showing kindness and caring about other members of the class. Emma Wildman (5E) has her writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Cecilia Crocker (5T) received the golden leaf award for all round effort and achievement and being helpful to other children. Isla Gray (5T) has her writing on the showstopper wall.

Have a super weekend,

The Year 5 team

Friday 8th June, 2018

This week in Maths, the children have been practicing their skills in Geometry translating and reflecting shapes. In English, they have been collecting vocabulary about Ancient Egypt, described different scenes and written what they would see and how they would feel if they were archaeologists entering an undiscovered tomb.

Please continue to work on the spelling lists, using the strategies given. Children should have a list of personal spellings in their home learning diary from the Year 5/6 list or the ones given to them. Some children know that they need to practice spelling plural words including irregular ones.

Reading comprehension homework is due on Monday next week, when another one will be sent home. We are asking children to stay in at break and/or lunch to complete any homework that has not been brought to school, so please remind them to check that it is in their bag on Monday morning.

The children enjoyed some STEM work today, looking at how we could try to clean dirty water for drinking. They had to decide what material(s) would work best at filtering the dirty water before experimenting with their ideas.

This week Chloe Lymer (5E) received the golden leaf award for her perseverance and becoming more independent with Maths tasks. Liam Tomkins (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Harrison Meadows (5T) received the golden leaf award for improved behaviour. Riley Morgan (5T) has his writing on the showstopper wall.

Have an enjoyable weekend,

The Year 5 team
