This week the children have been developing their understanding adding and subtracting fraction with denominators that are multiples and developing their understanding of rounding decimals. They have been writing character studies and settings in preparation for their space adventure stories in English.

For homework the children have another 6 spellings from the Year 5/6 list, Mymaths and need to complete another section from the homework pyramid. This homework is due by next Thursday (2^nd Feb). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week CAFOD visited YR5 to speak to the children about a public speaking competition. The theme of the speech is: ‘What’s for dinner?’ The children who are interested in taking part will need to research into what CAFOD does, using their website (picturemyworld.cafod.org.uk). The competition will take place on Tuesday 7^th Feb afterschool and there will be trophy awarded to the individual with the best speech. It requires two speakers and a reserve to represent the school.

This week Olivia Perdu (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her to always try her hardest in every lesson’ and Alexander Jones (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Oscar Knight (5F) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave him to always put hundred percent effort into his work’. Jeffrey Mamman Mathew (5F) has his work on the showstoppers wall too.

The children are excited about their visit to the Winchester Science Museum on Friday 3^rd Feb!

This week the children have been developing their understanding of powers of 10 and negative numbers. They have been writing instructions for a hoverbike ensuring that they included time conjunctions, organisational devices and imperative verbs.

For homework the children have another 6 spellings from the Year 5/6 list, Mymaths and need to complete another section from the homework pyramid. This homework is due by next Friday (27^th January). Children are more than welcome to bring their homework in early if they have completed it.

This week Luke Wheatley (5E) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave him to work hard and produce some super pieces of work and Onjoro Sumba (5E) has his writing displayed on the showstoppers wall. Erin Freeman (5F) received the golden leaf award for ‘using the gifts God gave her to support other members of the class’. Bella-Rose Binney (5F) has her work on the showstoppers wall too.

This week the children have been developing their reasoning skills in maths. They had to justify their use of a particular method when adding or subtracting larger numbers. The children have produced some lovely explanation texts about space or a particular planet that they have researched.

We hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

The children came back to school keen to start their new topic: space. Already we’ve seen such enthusiasm and engagement, and we’re only three days in to the new term!

Well done to children who have brought in great and varied formats of homework, we’ve enjoyed sharing them with each other this afternoon.

5E have enjoyed their first swimming session with comments about how well behaved they were from members of the public. They’re looking forward to their upcoming sessions every Thursday morning.
