What a week!

Hello,

The children have settled back into the routine of school life this week and have shown a real engagement with our learning. Through our first experience of home learning this week it appears that the Stone Age has been a big hit and we’ve had many stone age tools being created and shown to the class (fortunately no one has been practicing their neolithic hunting techniques!) A very big thank you to the children for putting so much hard work in.

You will find that there are new activities on MyMaths and Abacus this week, if you experience any problems please do tell a member of staff. For those trying to access MyMaths through an I-Pad, I am informed that you will need to download the ‘Puffin Academy’ App.

This week in our maths we have looked at adding and subtracting hundreds and ones to a three digit number e.g. 300+455 and 532-4. In our English we have been writing instruction texts and thought about how we could use conjunctions. Perhaps you could write instructions for someone in your house for how to set the table or how to tidy a bedroom.

We hope you really enjoy your learning at home and are looking forward to another wonderful week of learning.

Thank you,

Year 4 Team

Another week is done!

What a great week of learning we have had. We have  all been working very hard practicing our subtraction skills in maths, we’ve written our own persuasive leaflets in literacy but we’re sure all the children will agree that the best bit must have been our wonderful trip to Marwell Zoo which links in with our science topic this term.

Here’s part a piece of recount writing from Cecilia in 4HA that tells you some parts of our wonderful day…

Our visit to Marwell Zoo:

On Tuesday 20th September 2016, St Peter’s, the year 4 class, went to the wonderful Marwell zoo to learn about animals and their habitats.

We got onto the double decker bus in the morning. Outseide, we saw loads of different cars and a truck carrying loads of cars. We got out and waited for our groups and, when we were all there, we went through reception to sign in.

After that, Mrs Crocker’s roup saw the penguins dive into the water. they had little beds in the hut and we saw them actually swimming underwater from the look out. They loved swimming and gliding through the dirty water.

Next, we found the baby leopards. They were very cute. We saw them from the viewing platform and they played with the mummy leopard – she was trying to teach them how to climb up on rock hills and jump on logs.

It really was a great day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy weekend

Wow, that was a busy week of learning at school!

In Maths, we have been rounding to the nearest hundred with 4 digit numbers. This was quite tricky and so any extra practise at home would be beneficial.

In English, we have been learning how to be persuasive. We were trying to convince an animal to come an stay at an enclosure in ~Marwell Zoo.

Next week is our visit to Marwell Zoo – I’m sure the children are just as excited as the staff.  We will be posting pictures of our visit next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Team Four 🙂

Welcome to a new year!

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Year 4 and to a new academic year. We hope you all had a fantastic summer and are looking forward to the many fun and exciting learning opportunities in the year ahead.

We will be having a welcome meeting for all Year 4 parents on Monday 12th September to talk about the upcoming academic year. Details will be sent home shortly and we look forward to seeing you all there.

From Miss Hill, Mrs Atkins, Mrs Stewart, Mrs Cairns and Mrs Richardson.

Team 4!

Make some noise!

Hello,

As you will be aware our final topic of the year will be focused on the subject of noise and how it’s made. Already the children have been experimenting to find out more about this. Below you’ll find the Home Learning pyramid for our topic:

Pitch Perfect

If you decide to do any experiments of your own at home, why not write up your results and bring them into school? Maybe you could even make a graph to show your results!

Thank you,

Year 4 Team

Heroes Week

This week we have been celebrating heroes. In literacy we have been learning about the various features of biographies and have written some about King Alfred. Maths has  been focused on collecting, showing and interpreting information. Children are now able to collect information using tally charts and are able to record this  in bar charts and line graphs.

We have also had the opportunity to listen to and ask questions of real life heroes. On Monday Mr Hunt  came to our school and spoke to us about the fantastic charity work that he does for service men and women who have been injured. Thursday afternoon began with a visit from Mr Ozouf. Mr Ozouf        worked as a computer engineer  and spoke of his many exciting and brave experiences on Royal Navy vessels.

We hope that you have a restful half term.

Thank you

Goodbye to Miss Horn

Hello,

This week year 4 said goodbye to Miss. Horn who has been a student teacher helping us to learn in our year group. Miss. Horn has worked hard to build relationships with all of the children in 4A and this showed as there were cards and songs written for her. We wish her all the best in the rest of her training!

Tomorrow is Art Day! On this day we will be looking at different artistic techniques that we will use to build art work in time for the Waterlooville Art Trail! Look out for pictures being uploaded to the website!

This week in our maths we have explored fractions and decimals. At home you could go back and look at finding fractions of a shape or find more unusual equivalent fractions.

In our Literacy we have been finalising our information texts about the Vikings. At home you could try creating an information text about your favourite game, sport, TV programme or book!

We don’t do maths by halves!

Hello,

It has been a very busy week. The children have been working really hard solving problems involving fractions. They have been with halves, quarters, thirds and tenths. Perhaps they could make their own fraction walls as part of their home learning.

In their literacy, children have started their own Viking information texts. They have been practicing their research skills and have made notes about Vikings which they will use in their information texts.

Keep an eye out for a letter next week telling you about our upcoming Viking day.

Thank you

Year 4 Team

Welcome back Miss Horn!

Hello,
This week in maths we have been continuing to practice our skills to solve addition and subtraction problems. Mr Austin and I are very pleased with the commitment that the children have shown in this area of their learning.

The children have finished their Saxon stories this week and have spent time editing and improving them ready to publish. Next week we will be learning about the Vikings and the impact that they had on Britain.

Please continue with the excellent home learning and have a fantastic weekend in the sun!

Thank you,

Year 4 Team

Super Saxon stories and subtraction (with some addition)!

Hello,

We hope that you have had a fantastic week. We have been working really hard on our use of addition and subtraction. The children have been adding and subtracting  numbers up to four digits, in order to solve Saxon problems.

Over the past few weeks the children have been learning a range of skills in order to write their own Saxon stories. Perhaps they could impress you with their knowledge of fronted adverbial phrases!

We are as always impressed with the quality of home learning. Please continue to support your children in their projects.

Thank you
