… Year 4 have been learning lots about the Saxon brothers, Hengest and Horsa in our topic and guided reading.

In RE, we continue to study Heaven; what the Bible tells us about it and what it looks like to us individually.

In English we’ve been working hard to add fronted adverbials into our work (phrases that give the reader a bit more information about where, when or how something happened). The driver for this was a short clip from the Nike advert featuring Ronaldo which lots of the children loved.

In Maths we have continued looking at shape and coordinates and will be moving on to multiplication and division next week.

In spellings this week we have been learning the rule for turning a verb ending in -d or -de into a noun by adding -sion:

explosion, division, collision, corrosion, conclusion, extension, comprehension, evasion, intrusion.

Weekly Prayer

This final week has been a most exciting one, ending with 6C day, where the children took part in numerous activities around the school linked to people who help us in difficult situations. From learning CPR and the recovery position to orienteering inspired by Hampshire Search and Rescue.

This week we are also saying goodbye (temporarily!) to Mrs Stewart  as she leaves us to have a baby. We wish her and her family all the very best for this exciting new chapter.

SP2 WK5

This week in English, the children have been focusing on grammar and improving sentences. They made use of thesauruses to up-level their vocabulary, changing nouns and adjectives to have a greater effect on the reader.

In maths, we have been solving problems involving money and measure. The children have thought deeply about what the question requires you to do, and which different methods they could choose to solve it.

In RE, we have continued to look at the Beatitudes, what they really mean and where they apply in our own lives.

Today was DT day and the children created some rather impressive pop-up books, like this one…

The children used stories which they planned and wrote last week as their inspiration for these creations. They really are wonderful and we know the children are looking forward to bringing them home soon!

Weekly Prayer

This week the children have been busy learning about conversion in Maths.  We have looked at different representations of the same height, weight and distance.

The children have also be exploring problems such as:

Simon and Matthew were taking 2 tents with them on the hike.  Altogether the tents were 4.2metres tall.  One of the tents was definitely less than 1.5m tall.  How high could each of the tents be?

OR:

Sarah and Stanley are packing food boxes for the Scout Hike. They are two boxes: Box A and Box B.

Box A and Box B                            =    1.2kg

Fran and Paddy are going to take two Box A and One Box B

Box A + Box A + Box B                  = 1.9kg

The children think Box A and Box B are the weight. Are they right? Convince me!

In Literacy, the children have been writing stories where the main character is taken to another world unexpectedly. We have been exploring how we can use short sentences to make the reader feel scared for the main character to much success.

Team Four

This week the children have taken part in some fundraising activities for CAFOD.  The children were quite the picture in their odd clothes combination.  Thank you all for taking part and being good sports.  It’s not too late to send in donations for CAFOD.  Any amount is warming welcomed.

Koala class had their trip to Staunton today. We had a great time learning about the sounds of Staunton and creating Music in a natural environment. More pictures to follow.

In Maths this week, we have continued to look at understanding decimal numbers. The later part of the week has focused on the skill of rounding decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number for example 13.2 rounds to 13.

In Literacy, we have explored similes, metaphors and personification. The children have been very creative and have tried to stay away from common similes moving instead towards generating original ideas.

Team FOUR

On Thursday 9th March 2017, we are taking part in a fundraiser for CAFOD.  We are doing an odd clothes day which we will all come into school dressed in odd combinations of clothes. It will also include other activities throughout the day. The activities that we can take part in are: ‘pull an ugly face competition’, ‘a fashion show (to show off any odd clothing combinations)’, ‘Eco Warriors’ (helping the environment), and finally ‘a joke-athon’. Each child in our class needs to bring in a contribution for CAFOD.

Weekly Prayer for Year 4

This week, we have been learning about decimals and the fraction equivalents. For example, we have been investigating how we could write 1/4 and 1/2 as a decimal as well as all the other ways we could write it as a fraction (i.e. 0.25 OR 2/8). We have used lots of visual models and images to ensure that we understand the value of tenths compared to the hundredths.

In Literacy, we have looked at our new text driver – Jemmy Button. We have looked at using prepositions and thinking about our sentence structure.

For spellings we have been looking at words ending in ‘tion’ as well as setting ourselves some of our own personal spellings to learn.

Our Context lead topic for the half term is ‘Good to be me!’ Can you find lots of reasons why it is good to be you?!

The children have had a great week settling back into the school routine for which we are very proud! Have a restful weekend and we shall see you after the weekend.

Team Four

On Friday, 5 members of St Peters Catholic Primary School took part in an Maths Olympiad at Crookhorn College. The five children were Oliver, Jacob, Anna, Orla and Cecilia from year 4 and 5. We had to try are hardest to answer fun but challenging questions such as odd ones out and jigsaws in only four minutes. There were ten different tables with two questions in each, the main and the bonus. If you got both the questions right you will achieve the maximum amount of points for your team. If you get the main right but not the bonus your team will get ten points, but if it’s the other way round and you only get the bonus right your team will get five points. Team St Peters used there time wisely and split there team in half so some were on the bonus and the rest were on the main. St Peters came in third place out of six schools which is really good as half of the schools weren’t even mentioned. We all got medals to share with our families at home.

Another week has flown by, full of fun and learning in Year 4.

YEAR FOUR WRITING NEWS

In English last week, we were commentators. This week, however, we have been REPORTERS! We have been looking at newspaper reports and all the features that appear within them. We’ve had fun role-playing reporters, reading newspapers and BBC Newsround for pleasure and have been working hard to use embedded clauses and the 5Ws.

In Maths this week, we’ve been looking at addition, mostly using the expanded column method. We’ve worked really hard to get to grips with exchanging from the next column when we need to. Some of us looked at tricky two-step word problems where the information was hidden – we’ve been challenging our brains!

In RE we have been looking at the Light Mysteries and we have written a guide which we are looking forward to sharing with the Year 2 children shortly.
