This week in Maths we have been looking at using mental strategies to calculate multiplication problems e.g to solve 24 x 6 you could do (2×12) x 6, (6×2) x 12 or (12×6) x 2. Then, we have looked at solving 2-digit by 1-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication calculation using the grid method.
The children have been asked to practice the grid method with 2-digit by 1-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication calculations.

In English, we’ve been planning our letter as Jemmy Button addressed to his Mother. This has involved using a wide range of skills such as: fronted adverbials, time conjunctions, 5 senses, subordinate clauses. We will begin writing our letters on Monday.

In RE, we’ve spent time understanding the parable of the Tax Collector and Pharisee. The children have made beautiful Hands of Prayer and detailed responses.

Today we went to Marwell Zoo. The children had a great day, learnt a lot and had heaps of fun! Thankfully the weather was dry too. Thanks to all of our parent helpers, we couldn’t have done it without you – if any of you took photos of the animals or your own child that you are happy to share, please do send them in to adminoffice@stpeterswaterlooville.hants.sch.uk. “Best school day ever!” exclaimed Harry. “I loved the meerkats because they are so cute!” thought Eniola. Hayden added, “Thank you to all the teachers and helpers for taking us to the beautiful zoo, some of us have never been before.”

Team 4!

In Maths this week we’ve been adding and subtracting using the formal column method. We’ve progressed from using the expanded method which partitions the numbers, to the quicker, more efficient compact method. Please can the children continue to practice these methods at home, alongside word problems. If the children find this easy, they can move on to two-step problems (this requires the children to do more than one calculation to find the answer). See examples below.

EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM – (Adapted from Tilly Grove’s own problem) Tilly has collected 487 bottle caps for charity. Her friend gives her 1026 more. She decides to split the bottle caps so that two charities will benefit. She gives 876 to CAFOD and the rest go to the Rowans Hospice. How many will the Hospice receive?

In English, we’ve been continuing to look at our new text, Jemmy Button, thinking about the emotional journey that he took and how we can convey this through our writing with show-not-tell sentences. Show-not-tell sentences aim to describe the physical responses the body has to emotions, rather than to just state them. For example, instead of ‘I feel scared’, children could write, ‘a cold shiver runs down my spine as the once soft hairs on my arm stand to attention’. Question your children about how they’re feeling in different situations this weekend and ask them how they know, what is their body doing? These could be written down to be shared with the class next week.

In RE, we’ve spent time considering and discussing the philosophical question, ‘Can you forgive everybody?’ The children have engaged well and contributed thoughtful and mature answers.

Today was the final of the Poetry Recital. Congratulations to James Riggs, the winner of the Year 3/4 Poetry Recital – your accent won the crowd over!

In Maths this week we’ve finished our Geometry unit by looking different quadrilaterals and lines of symmetry of a given shape. Next week we’ll be returning to Number and Place Value with emphasis on deeper learning. The children have been encouraged for homework to consolidate their understanding of quadrilaterals, drawing lines of symmetry on shapes/drawing missing sections of shapes and practice rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 (challenge – nearest whole).

In English, we’ve been looking at our new text, Jemmy Button, and thinking of inventive ways to describe the settings. The children have been encouraged to practice their understanding of: using prepositional phrases within powerful and engaging sentences and use of (complex and non cliché) similes to create an image in the reader’s mind e.g. The pedestrians scuttle around the city like ants rushing to their nests.

In RE, we’ve been looking at our Lenten promises and how they would help the world rather than just being a benefit for ourselves. Also, we’ve looked closely at Jesus’s time travelling through the desert and how he overcome temptation from the Devil.

In Maths this week, we have begun our Geometry unit and looked at different triangles and their corresponding properties. The first week back will involve learning about different quadrilaterals and how to classify them correctly. Some pre learning over half term would be fantastic!

Please note that in the video above, ‘Trapezoid’ is the American term for a trapezium.

In English, we’ve been writing, editing and publishing our Peter Pan play scripts to send to the Hayling Theatre Group.

In RE, we have concluded our unit on Revelations and look forward to starting Lent after the break.

For homework over half term the children have been given an extensive list of spellings to practise. The rules are: ‘W or wh’ words e.g with, what etc. and ‘gh’ word e.g. caught, enough etc.

For Maths, the children have been told to practise anything they have found challenging over this half term. This could involve consolidating their understanding of:

• Solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations
• Word problems involving any of the four operations (with two steps or more)
• Inverse
• Time (converting between 12hr and 24hr and drawing hands on a clock face)
• Area and perimeter
• Converting between different units of measurement

Congratulations to James Riggs, Islwyn Mainwaring and Jacob Kurowski! These children have been chosen as Year 4’s finalists for the Poetry Recital which will take place on March 9th. Please remember to bring props!

What an exciting end to the week!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed today’s STEM day. We welcomed guests from Scottish Southern Energy who gave a workshop on electricity and staying safe. In the afternoon, we experimented with using different fruit and vegetables as power sources for series circuits.

In Maths this week we have been looking at calculating the area of rectilinear shapes, as well as converting between different units of measure.

English learning this week involved planning our play scripts in preparation for writing our final play script about Peter Pan next week.

In RE we looked at Nunc Dimittis, Simeon’s response to seeing Jesus in the Temple.

Homework this week includes using the place value grid to practise converting between different units of measure (by multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1000). Remember to use the key vocabulary: ten times greater/smaller, one hundred times greater/smaller and one thousand times greater/smaller – NOT ‘just adding/taking away the zeros’!

The children have written this week’s spellings in their Home Learning Diary.

What an interesting end to the week in Year 4! Ask your child about the science experiment we did this afternoon…

In Maths, this week we having been learning to tell the time. From our individual starting points, we have progressed to reading the analogue and digital time (12 and 24 hour). We have also solved word problems involving time intervals and reading timetables.

Our English work this week has involved writing an exciting commentary of Peter Pan and Hook’s battle using a variety of impressive vocabulary. We have now moved on to understanding the features of a play script, taking speech from a graphic novel and changing its format.

RE this week has progressed onto looking closely at Jesus’s Presentation at the Temple. We have written the headline and opening paragraph of a newspaper, reporting the story.

For home learning over next week the children will benefit from continuing to practise telling the time in both analogue and digital (12hr and 24hr). It has been suggested that a ‘time diary’ would be a good idea to complete. For example, at what time did you eat dinner and how long did this last for? In preparation for our next unit of work on Measurement (converting mm-cm, g-kg, for example), children should refresh themselves on place value (multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000).

In Maths this week we having been look at finding fractions of amounts and solving simple word problems involving fractions.

Our English work this week has involved orally rehearsing vocabulary in preparation to write a commentary for a scene in the Peter Pan film.

RE this week has progressed onto looking closely at Jesus’s Transfiguration and its link to light.

For home learning over next week the children have to practise telling the time in both analogue and digital (12hr and 24hr). This could include counting the number of minutes until a given point and converting minutes to hours (and vice versa). If this is something you find easy, then why not try solving word problems that involve time conversions!

The Year 4 Team!

Hello!

In Maths we have been continuing with our work on fractions. In particular, the children have been finding equivalent fractions and adding fractions with the same denominator, sometimes with the total being greater than one whole.

In English we have been continuing our Captain Hook character description, using a variety of sentence openers, noun phrases and figurative language. Here is a phrase from 4HA’s Showstopper Writer this week: ‘The devilish captain, menacingly gazed at the retreating crew, intimidating them as they sailed the rippled, moonlit sea.’

In RE we have begun our unit on Revelations by looking at the multi-faith element of Diwali. We have been studying Rangoli – an artform handed down through the generations, typically painted outside people’s doors to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi and her good luck in. The children designed and created their own patterns along the walkways in school.

Please check your child’s school bag for the maths homework sheet and their diary, where they should have written their spellings to be completed over the next week.
