Science Biomes
Our STEM day helped us to understand that living things can be divided into groups based upon their characteristics and environmental change and human activity affects different habitats differently.
We collected our research about each of the following habitats:
- Aquatic
- Forest
- Desert
- Tundra
- Grassland
We used information books and Planet Earth documentaries to record key facts about each biome.
Afterwards, we talked about our homes and what was needed to keep humans alive. The children then discussed how they would re-create suitable conditions for the animals to survive within their domes. We also talked about the life cycles of different animals. Our 3D biomes helped us to show a cross – section of each habitat.
Welcome Year 4
And just like that, 2 weeks have zipped by.
The children have had an amazing start to the term in Year 4. They have been fully immersed in our first English writing Unit based on writing Howlers as seen in Harry Potter. We have been so impressed with the work that they have been producing already and look forward to writing our final Howlers next week!
Our Maths learning has been focusing on the securing of pace value for numbers into the thousands. Regular use of the times table Rockstars and sumdog apps will continue to help support your child’s learning in school. The log in for these is the same as before.
Don’t forget if you completed the reading challenge to bring in your certificate and medal to show Mrs Porter and receive a prize from school. Also, keep working on your reading passport – bring these in on Tuesdays (kangaroo) and Thursdays (koala) so you can use it in the library to select books that you need to read and to have any you have read signed off by your teachers. Happy reading!
Well done Year four on a successful return to school!

We were learning to:
- Record voice recording using clear intonation and expression
- Import sound effects and/or background music using kid sound board
- Align the audio so the background noises fit with the voice recordings
- Edit the imported audio if needed – cutting it using the trimming symbol.
- Listen to and review our project throughout, editing audio to improve quality.
- Check the volume of the tracks making sure the background noise was quieter than the audio recordings.
Have a go creating Podcast over the holidays whilst having fun in the sun!!

STEM DAY – EARTHQUAKES
We’d like to say a special Thank you to Mrs Broadway and Mrs Sykes for coming over from Oaklands to teach us all about Earthquakes! Our day was filled with lots of fun, engaging and interactive tasks which helped us with our understand of how, where and when Earthquales occur! We even made Earthquake proof houses! It was a great day!
Here are some photos of our day:
The Digestive System
Hello everyone,
We hope that you are all well and keeping safe.
We have been having lots of fun with our Science learning in Year Four. In our current unit of work, we have been studying the parts of the Human Digestive System and have even explored non-fiction pages on this topic, as part of our Guided Reading sessions. Last week, both of the year four classes made a human digestive system in small groups. It was lots of fun to see how the stomach acid was used to break down the food and to watch the release of nutrients through the intestinal walls as they passed into the blood stream! Please see a selection of photos below…
A few quick reminders:
- The children have been given RE home learning for the Easter break – when we return to school after half term, the children shall be learning about the Resurrection of Christ and the impact of this miracle upon His believers. We would like all pupils to complete their 3-page RE task, as an alternative to the standard spelling, vocabulary and maths home learning slips this week. We ask for all pupils to return these completed activities to school, after the Easter break.
- On Friday 21st April 2023, the children in Y4 shall be taking part in an Earthquake STEM day, as part of our Geography learning. In the weeks leading up to this date, please could your child bring in any junk modelling materials to school, such as cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, egg cartons, etc. This is because the children shall be creating structures and investigating the impact of Earthquakes and tremors upon buildings and infrastructure.
Have a wonderful Easter break,
Best wishes,
Year Four Team
World Book Day
Hi everyone,
We hope that you are all well – it has been lovely to see you all again at parent’s evening to discuss the children’s learning and progress. Last week, we really enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day as our favourite story characters. Please see the photos below…
In English, we have started our learning on Jemmy Button and creating our own paintings to illustrate the journey taken by Jemmy throughout the story. We have also generated expanded noun phrases and used thesauruses to make powerful descriptions. In Maths, we have been having lots of fun completing our potions problems, as part of our learning on measurement and statistics.
A few reminders for next week:
- Mother’s Day sale to take place next week.
- Please ensure your child continues their Times Table Rockstars practise for 10 mins a day, using the sound check option.
- Red and yellow home learning books to be completed and returned to school on Friday 17th March 2023.
We hope you all have a pleasant weekend,
Best wishes,
Year Four Team
PDL and History
Hello everyone,
We hope that you are all having a pleasant weekend.
This week, the children have been working very hard across their curriculum learning. For PDL, we have been role playing scenarios about friendship and how to solve friendship issues. We have discussed the strategies we could use when we have disagreements with our friends, considering how to resolve in a calm and patient manner. We are really looking forward to World Book Day tomorrow – which book character will you dress up as?
In History, we have started our learning on The Vikings – we took a look at a range of historical clues and made some predictions as we organised our ‘key event’ cards into chronological order, without the date stamps! After lots of discussion, we then revealed the dates to see how close our own predictions had been. Please see the photos below.
A few quick reminders for next weeek:
- Please continue to log in to Times Table Rockstars – we encourage 10 minutes a day of practice, to help your child best prepare for the Y4 multiplication check.
- Next week’s home learning books (red and yellow) to be completed and returned to school by Friday 10th March.
- Parents Evenings shall take place on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th March 2023.
We hope you all have a great weekend,
Best wishes,
Year Four Team.
Welcome back!
Hi everyone,
We hope that you are all well and enjoying the week so far.
We have enjoyed celebrating the Ash Wednesday service and have been thinking about how we can pray, give and act to keep Jesus at the centre of our hearts. Please see the photos below…
In English, we have been studying Spring TIme poetry and enjoying the beauty of the nature around us. In Maths, we have been learning various methods for multiplication of two and three digit numbers. We look forward to moving on to division strategies on Monday. Next week, we shall be celebrating World Book day which shall take place on Thursday 2nd March 2023. Which of your favourite book characters will you dress up as?
We hope you all have a pleasant weekend,
Best wishes,
Year Four Team

DT sewing workshop
Good morning,
We hope that you are all well and keeping warm despite the chilly weather!
At the end of last week, Year Four were very excited to welcome parents and carers to school, to take part in our DT sewing afternoon. We would like to thank everybody who attended and supported the children. The children made a fantastic selection of purses, wallets and money carriers – we were very impressed by the creative, unique and purposeful designs and fastenings that had been generated by the children. We now look forward to sharing our sewing products and gifting them to our chosen friend or family member. Please see below for a selection of images…
We also enjoyed celebrating a Y3/4 Mass with parents and carers at St. Peter’s, led by Father Jeremy. Thank you again to everyone who attended, and a huge well done to all of the children and staff who were involved in the preparations for Mass. We would also like to thank Miss J. Heath (Oaklands chaplain) for all of her hard work and for practising prayers and readings with the Year 3 and 4 pupils.
A few brief reminders for next week:
- Monday 30th January 2023, from 3.25-4.15pm: Y4 parent book look in the Y4 classrooms. This is an opportunity for your child to share their learning with you and to talk about what they have enjoyed so far in Year Four.
- Red home learning books (Spelling, Vocabulary and Maths) to be completed and handed in to school by Friday 3rd February 2023.
- Please encourage your child to continue logging on daily to Times Table Rockstars, in order to help them to prepare for the Y4 multiplication check in the Summer Term.
We hope you all have a great week,
Best wishes,
