Singing is well and truly back on the menu after a two-year hiatus! This week the children enjoyed their second session with Mrs Richardson, a music specialist from Oaklands, where they practised their part-harmonies. We also finished the week with our first upper-school singing practice for quite some time.

The Year 6 Team

The year 6 children have had a fantastically productive and creative last week of this spring term, particularly within their history topic of Baghdad.

Using clues gleaned from ancient scripts, the children had to visualise what a bird’s-eye view of Baghdad might have looked like. They included all of the features and then the actual view was revealed to the children so that they could compare. Below you will find a range of examples of their thinking.

In addition to this work, the children have also produced their third piece of writing within our Shackleton unit – this time a narrative recount of the moment at which The Endurance succumbed to the pressure of the ice. Some superb, suspenseful writing has come from this.

Over half-term, we would like the children to continue to use SATsBootcamp to work on their known areas of need in Reading, Writing and Maths – while also having a great and well-deserved rest.

On Monday the Year 6 children were treated to an audience with Polly Ho Yen, author of ‘Boy in the Tower’ – a novel that they have studied in Year 5.

They learned about her journey to becoming a novelist and Polly really conveyed the message to the children that, ‘Yes you can!’ do anything in life. She pursued her passion for writing stories that interested her and this was her epiphany – ‘This is what I want to do, so I will!’

The children will be able to deploy her wisdom into some story writing next week, where they will write a narrative about when Shackleton’s Endurance succumbs to the forces of the Weddell Sea and the pack ice.

A great week’s maths learning has been had by all in Year 6 this week, where we have become familiar with the language of ratio and a range of strategies that can be applied to solve this type of problem. In Year 6 this week, we have kick-started our Evolution and Adaptation unit, where the children began to develop their understanding of evolution through the lens of the peppered moth and the impact of the Industrial Revolution.

The Year 6 children have made great efforts in their Maths learning this week, thinking deeply and using pictorial representations to make sense of the information given in problems involving fractions.

Year 6 have been in reflective mood this week, where they have been understanding the importance of Advent in the Liturgical Calendar and its significance to Christ. For their class RE Big Books, children showed how they are Preparing and Waiting and showing patience for the coming of Jesus. Take a look below!

Using a scene from a war film as their driver, along with the Seigfried Sassoon World War One poem ‘The Hero’, the children finished the week penning their poignant, emotive story depicting the moment in which a mother receives the grave news of her son’s passing.
