Exploring the Golden Age of Baghdad AD900

The year 6 children have had a fantastically productive and creative last week of this spring term, particularly within their history topic of Baghdad.

Using clues gleaned from ancient scripts, the children had to visualise what a bird’s-eye view of Baghdad might have looked like. They included all of the features and then the actual view was revealed to the children so that they could compare. Below you will find a range of examples of their thinking.

In addition to this work, the children have also produced their third piece of writing within our Shackleton unit – this time a narrative recount of the moment at which The Endurance succumbed to the pressure of the ice. Some superb, suspenseful writing has come from this.

Over half-term, we would like the children to continue to use SATsBootcamp to work on their known areas of need in Reading, Writing and Maths – while also having a great and well-deserved rest.

Have a lovely break,

Learning from an expert in their field…

On Monday the Year 6 children were treated to an audience with Polly Ho Yen, author of ‘Boy in the Tower’ – a novel that they have studied in Year 5.

They learned about her journey to becoming a novelist and Polly really conveyed the message to the children that, ‘Yes you can!’ do anything in life. She pursued her passion for writing stories that interested her and this was her epiphany – ‘This is what I want to do, so I will!’

The children will be able to deploy her wisdom into some story writing next week, where they will write a narrative about when Shackleton’s Endurance succumbs to the forces of the Weddell Sea and the pack ice.

Have a wonderful weekend.

It’s all about the ratio…

A great week’s maths learning has been had by all in Year 6 this week, where we have become familiar with the language of ratio and a range of strategies that can be applied to solve this type of problem. See below for a series of photos that demonstrate a part of this learning journey. Look out for the pupil explanations of their thinking which is an example of metacognition in action.

Have a great weekend.

Join Shackleton’s crew!

Our first writing outcome from our Shackleton unit has been completed. Take a look below. The children have done well to visualise and get into role as Shackleton looking to recruit a Captain. More pieces to follow soon…

Have a great weekend everyone.

An Evolutionary Discovery

In Year 6 this week, we have kick-started our Evolution and Adaptation unit, where the children began to develop their understanding of evolution through the lens of the peppered moth and the impact of the Industrial Revolution.

Why not ask your child about it!?

Here is a sample of some of the outcomes:

Have a great weekend!

Look forward to seeing you online on Monday at 4:30pm for our virtual SATs meeting.

The Year 6 Team

It’s all about the sum of the parts!

The Year 6 children have made great efforts in their Maths learning this week, thinking deeply and using pictorial representations to make sense of the information given in problems involving fractions.

Here is a lovely example of this in action from Jaqueline.

Please keep checking your Parentmail for a link to the Year 6 SATs information presentation, taking place via Teams on Monday 24th January at 4:30.

Have a lovely weekend

Preparing…

Year 6 have been in reflective mood this week, where they have been understanding the importance of Advent in the Liturgical Calendar and its significance to Christ. For their class RE Big Books, children showed how they are Preparing and Waiting and showing patience for the coming of Jesus. Take a look below!

Have a great weekend!

Solid writing outcomes this week…

Using a scene from a war film as their driver, along with the Seigfried Sassoon World War One poem ‘The Hero’, the children finished the week penning their poignant, emotive story depicting the moment in which a mother receives the grave news of her son’s passing.

This is one example below:

Have great weekend!

Gone with the wind

Thank you to all parents and carers who attended our Online Parents Evening – it was very well represented and we hope that you left feeling like your child is working hard and is settling in to year 6 life – we believe EVERY child is.

We will be in contact over the next week with what we advise your child would benefit from when purchasing the CGP books. On top of this, hopefully you have been shown by your child the SATSBOOTCAMP website that year 6 have subscribed to, and they have their username and password somewhere safe for some top-up learning at home during the school term and the holidays! The teachers of year 6 cannot stress enough what a beneficial tool the SATSBOOTCAMP website is as a learning and revision platform – the PITCH of question and the RANGE and VARIATION of question and question style is very similar to that of SATs, so your child will grow in their composure, confidence and resilience all of the time as they navigate the website and its questions. Mr Pratley and Mr Land used the website on their year 6 cohort of children three years ago and they absolutely bounced off the challenge of the questions and their knowledge and ‘test-fitness’ grew comprehensively. What’s not to love?!!!

Maths sees us deepening our strategies for solving division problems, and the possible ways we can go about this. The children have enjoyed the challenge of long division and have built their resilience to this method! It is hoped that they will end the week with a range of different ways to go about solving division arithmetic questions, including the partitioning method and using factor pairs as the number you are dividing by…It has been some number-crunching work so far, but they are seeing the fruits of their labour.

Our English and Reading unit sees the children over the next couple of weeks exploring a poem by Siegfried Sassoon – ‘The Hero’ – which delves in to World War 1 life in the trenches and at home, and the mother’s reaction to this. Marrying up with this text driver is a video extract which complements the poem uncannily, and so the children have a unique platform to write a poignant story from, when the mother receives the news of her son passing. The children have explored the feelings and thoughts of the mother so that they can compose a story that captures the emotional scene and the differing and hidden views of the Brother Officer delivering the news.

Finally, we would like to extend a big thank you to Rachel Mason from the Havant branch of the Two Saints Charity for giving her time to share her experiences of working with homeless people for over fifteen years. The children are now well informed and ready to take action to help this charity in the valuable work they do.
