Hello and welcome back to St Peters,

We hope you all had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas break. The children were very excited to tell us how they had celebrated Christmas day and New Year!

This week, the children have started to learn about Rainforests and what is special about them. In particular, Year Three have been skimming and scanning non-fiction texts, to find key information about the Rainforest. The children have enjoyed working in teams and exploring the Rainforest through video footage, information books and jigsaw work. This has enabled the children to produce factual, written work including technical vocabulary.

In Maths, Year Three have been building upon their prior knowledge of arrays. After experimenting with a wide range of equipment from our Y3 Maths toolkits, the children understand how repeated addition may be used to support the calculation of tricky multiplication sentences.

We would like to inform you that the children have now received their new Home Learning pyramids. The content and expectations for completing the pyramid have been explained in depth across both Y3 classes.

We would also like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and children for our lovely Christmas presents – they were a wonderful surprise and are greatly appreciated!

We would just like to congratulate all of the Year 3 children for their exceptional behaviour and commitment to learning, not only during the final week before the Christmas holidays but throughout the entire Autumn term. They have made us all very proud!

During the last week of term, the children enjoyed drafting and editing their own Winter poems, before performing them to Year One during the last day of school. It was a great opportunity for the children to entertain one another as well as to share comments and feedback on their performances.

In Maths, the children had fun learning about angles and shapes. By the end of the week, they were able to use shape mats as well as videos to help with their creation of 3D shapes from modelling clay (which no doubt have become some lovely tree decorations at home!).

In January, we look forward to introducing the children to their new topic, The Rainforest. If the children have anything they would like to bring to school in January – be it for show and tell or for classroom display – they are more than welcome to do so. Here are some examples…

It has been a busy week but we are very impressed with how the children have conducted themselves.  In addition to our Christmas preparations, the children have continued to work hard across all curriculum subjects.

In English, Year Three have performed poetry to their class and had the opportunity to evaluate their own and one another’s performances. They have explored a range of poetry and are now familiar with a wide variety of poetic features. Next week, we look forward to working with the children as they produce their own Winter poems then perform them to Year One!

In Maths, we have been exploring mass and capacity. The children were able to help with preparations for the Christmas meal, by measuring ingredients (g and kg) and liquids (ml and L). Next week, we look forward to learning about geometry, including angles and 3D shapes. Can the children spot any 3D shapes or right angles at home this weekend?

We would like to thank the children for their excellent performances in the KS2 Advent and carol services. Their behaviour walking to and from the church was outstanding, and has even been recognised by members of the public who they had passed en route. Likewise, Year Three have set a good example to other students throughout the course of 6C day – well done to everybody who ran a mile to raise money for the Hants and IOW Air Ambulance.

We hope you are all having a lovely weekend.

This week, the children have had lots of opportunities to show us their creativity across a wide range of subjects…

In English, we have been working hard to complete our scary stories. We are very impressed by the exciting word choices and sentences types that the children have been applying to their own writing. The stories are very entertaining to read, well done Year Three!

In Science – as part of our Rocks and Fossils unit – the children explored the Nature Trail and analysed their own soil samples. Towards the end of the week, Year Three have enjoyed making and then evaluating their own fossils. Thank you to those who have brought in some precious stones as part of their home learning – we have enjoyed looking at them closely under the class visualizer!

In Maths, the children have been subtracting amounts of money, using the expanded column method. They have shown a lot of commitment throughout their learning, especially when given some tricky word problems. Perhaps the children could practise using the expanded column method this weekend, to work out how much change they will receive if they are out Christmas shopping!

This week has been full of engaging learning opportunities for Year Three…

In English, we have continued to explore Emma Fischel’s spooky narrative, The Gorgle. We are very impressed by the imagination, creativity and commitment of the children. They have worked hard to perfect and improve their own story writing – each piece of work has been exciting to read!

In Maths, the children have enjoyed learning how to use the expanded column method. They have had lots of success when adding together the prices of different items, even in the context of tricky word problems. Well done, Year Three!

Keep up the good work, we can’t wait to see more of your excellent Bronze Age home learning.

This week the children have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities across the Year Three curriculum.

In English, we have been exploring Emma Fischel’s The Gorgle and the children have enjoyed making creative, spooky sentences to describe the haunted house! Over the week, it is clear to see how the children have acquired a firm understanding of a range of sentence types. Well done Year Three!

In Maths, the children have been collecting data and then presenting their information on a bar chart. We have looked at why data is important and how we can interpret our results. Perhaps the children could try collecting data over the weekend, to find out more about a hobby or sport that interests them…

In Science, we have looked at different types of rock – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic – and have even taken part in some experiments to test the physical properties of each rock type.

We are very impressed with the children’s Bronze Age home learning so far – keep up the good work, Year three!

Hello,

We have had a successful start to our new half term with the children coming back with a great attitude to their learning. We have continued to challenge ourselves to keep improving our learning.

In our maths we have been exploring measuring in cm and mm, including measuring the perimeter. As a good way to continue in practicing this learning, why not try measuring the things in your bedroom or in your kitchen?

In our Literacy we have been learning about how to organize our notes and learning using headings and subheadings. Look out in your home and see which books you have that use headings and subheadings.

Next week we will be learning about Remembrance Day and the importance of the poppy. We hope that the children will take the time to talk to you about what they learn about Remembrance Day and the continued importance that this has.

Year 3 Team

Well we have reached the end of our first half term of learning, and what a lot of learning there has been! The children now all appear to be experts in the Stone Age with many wonderful artifacts being brought in as part of the home learning.

In our final week of fractions for this half term we have been exploring finding fractions of amounts and the children have been able to represent their answers in diagrams and with tools. Keep practising at home with anything you can find!

The children have rewritten the first chapter of Stig of the Dump. We looked at using dialogue to help make our characters come to life and even acted out the scenes ourselves! I wonder if you can come up with what will happen in the rest of the story?

This week also saw our first Mass of the year at Sacred Heart Church, we took the time to reflect on the important role of Mary in our faith. Father Kevin was impressed with the attitude and mature behaviour that the children displayed and so were we! Well done to all those children who came to our Mass.

Thank you to all who have helped us over this half term including our Butser Ancient Farm trip and our Mass at Sacred Heart Church; this is always greatly appreciated and vital to allow us to continue providing these opportunities.

This week, the children have enjoyed exploring their Stone Age topic in further depth.

On Tuesday 11th October, Year Three were lucky enough to have a visitor from Butser Ancient Farm. During this activity, the children were very excited to learn fun facts about the Stone Age and even handle some of the ancient artefacts. The children have been very engaged across the course of our Stone Age topic – this has been reflected by some of the excellent home learning that they have worked hard to produce. Thank you to all parents who have supported their children in these projects. Photos of the visit and home learning can be seen below…

In Maths this week, the children have been learning about fractions. In particular we have worked on finding fractions of amounts (e.g. what is half of ten coins?) and shall continue to do so next week. A good home activity to try is to give the children a set of objects from around the house and split them between 2 or 4 hula hoops (in order to calculate halves or quarters of a full set of objects).

In English this week, the children have enjoyed reading Clive King’s Stig of the Dump as part of their latest unit of work (i.e. descriptive writing and narrative). After spending some time at our Nature Trail, the children have produced some brilliant descriptions of the chalk pit from Stig of the Dump. We have been very impressed by the children’s use of adjectives and sensory detail in their writing. Perhaps the children could go on a short walk this weekend, to look around their local environment and find some inspiration for further descriptive writing.

We had a wonderful CAFOD day raising lots of money for this wonderful charity. We saw a variety of weird and wonderful hats that certainly brightened our day!

Thank you for spending the time with the children to make the hats-it certainly showed a great deal of creativity!

This week in our Maths we have continued to explore mental multiplication and division. The children have grown in their confidence of when and how to use their mental maths skills, as shown when we had some very tricky word problems! Maybe your child could write some of their own problems for you or when your at the shops ask the children how many multiplication facts could they make for the eggs in an egg carton!

In our English we have been learning to write persuasively to sell a stone age house! The children have done a great job in using a variety of sentence types, such as rhetorical questions, and very exciting language to do this. I wonder what of yours they could try and sell us?
