Friday 21st May 2021

We’ve had a very busy couple of weeks in school so we hope you are ready for a run through of everything we have been doing.

Firstly, we are pleased to share that we had our first liturgy for a long time in the unity building. It was a really special occasion to get her together and think about our friendships and how we show love to one another. Photos can be found on Mr Cunningham’s main blog.

In Maths, we have been looking at 3D shapes and the properties of 2D shapes. We learnt what perpendicular and parallel lines were and spotted them in shapes. More recently we have been adding 2 numbers together using a column strategy. We have been really impressed with the children’s presentation and the way they have approached problem solving over the past couple of weeks.

In English, we have started our new unit using the Great Kapok Tree as our test driver. We will be writing a new page to be added to the book with details the affects on deforestation on the animals in the Rainforest.

Congratulations to the children who won the animal prizes for their last piece of writing! We were very proud of all the children’s efforts

We completed the Big Survey this week. The children were asked their views on school, life in the wider community as well as aspiration questions about what they might like to do when they are ‘grown ups’.

One more week before a well earned rest and hopefully some sunshine.

Don’t forget to bring home learning in this week so that we can take a good look at all the work you are doing at home.

Friday 7th May 2021

We have been busy publishing our Non chronological reports all about a new species that we have discovered in the Rainforest. For this writing outcome, the Year Three team will be awarding cuddly toys to the children for their efforts in the writing progress. Look out for a teddy coming home with you soon!

We have continued to look for links between and within times tables this week. We have represented the times tables in different ways. We have used 1, 10 5 derive to help use use halving to find 5 times a number.  We also looked at nearby facts! If I know 5 x 4 = 20 then 6x 4 must be 5×4 + 4 more.  It was tricky but we are just at the beginning of this way of thinking and will continue to look at this in years to come.

We have concluded out plants unit and will be starting our new unit on Forces and Magnets next week.  Have a think about what you already know and what you might like to learn about over the next few weeks in school.

Congratulations to all of our showstopper and golden key winners.

See you Monday

Friday 30th April 2021

Happy bank holiday weekend!

We have had a very eventful week in school. On Friday we had our school photos on the field, we got to watch an incredibly inspiring assembly with the Rock 2the beat rock band and finally Lee Hayward came in to tak to us about how to be safe online. Phew!

But that wasn’t it! In English, we have started to write up our non chronological report page all about the new animal that we discovered in the rainforest. We started with its appearance and we were trying to include lots of causal connectives and different noun choices.

In Maths we have been learning about the times tables and representing these in different ways. We have been looking for links between the facts. For example if I know

1x 4 = 4 then I know 10x 4 = 40. I can work out 5×4 by halving this to equal 20! This works for really big numbers too – but that’s just for fun or a party trick.

I also can make linked with doubling.
1×4 = 4 so 2×4 will be double and =8 and if I double it again it will be 4×4 =16. And I can even double it again which will be 8×4 =32. Wowser!
See what you can find out!

We have a science experiment on the go in school. We have put some celery in undiluted squash so we can see how water is transported up to the leaves where the plants makes it’s food.

Hope that everyone manages to stay nice and warm and dry this weekend. See you next week.

Friday 23rd April 2021

Welcome back to all the children. We hope that they all had a lovely Easter break. We’re pleased to see that it is finally warming up and have been making the most of getting outside for some of our learning this week.

During our Maths lessons this week we have be learning to multiply and divide by 10. We have used the HTO grid to help us make numbers ten times bigger and smaller.

We started our new English unit this week too. We have created our own rainforest animal and started to write sentences using causal connections such as if, when, in order to and so that.

We have continued to learn about the life cycle of plants and this week we looked at pollination and the role that bees play in that process. The children acted out how pollen is transferred from one flower to animal to another before they created a cartoon to explain it to a friend.

Don’t forget to try to access sumdog and TT rockstars as part of your home learning. Vocabulary and spelling sheets have been sent home with the children. The children have also received the reading passports that they can start completing over the next couple of weeks.

Happy St Georges Day.

Friday 26th March 2021

This week we reflected on the year that has passed since the first lockdown in the UK. We pray for all those who lost loved ones during this difficult times. ‘This storm too shall pass, that’s Gods promise. When life has turned upside down, remember that God has better days planned.’

We have been busy writing and finalising the Boudicca speeches ready to perform on Dress Up Day on Tuesday. We’re looking forward to seeing all the children dressed up ready for a day of Roman fun.

In Maths we continued to look at right angles turns clockwise and anti clockwise. The children thought carefully about their thinking and the different strategies they used to solve the problems.

In Science, we are excited to see that some of our plants are starting by to grow!! We set up an experiment to see what conditions plants thrive in. Some of us wanted to know if compost was needed for a seed to go. We put a seed in soil and a seed in paper towel- we’ll wait and see what happens.

Have a lovely weekend

Friday 19th March

Something very topical happened yesterday following our day learning about volcanoes. A volcano erupted south-west of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik. Here is a link to the BBC news article which could be read with the children.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56465393

We had a brilliant day learning all about volcanoes around the world, where they are found and the different layers of a volcano. We followed this up by creating our own volcano which ‘erupted’ on the playground after lunch. Pictures to follow!

In Maths we concluded our work on Fractions for now. We have now moved on to learning about angles. More of this will be coming up next week.

In English this week we listened to a speech by Boudicca leading her army into battle with a Roman Army who was certain to win. We have been practising skills to inspire for the speech we will write and perform on dress up day.

Finally, in History we managed to capture a Roman Soldier this week after doing some great spying on a near by Roman camp. We found out lots about the Roman equipment and formations from Marcus before we let him go!

Have a great weekend.

Friday 12th March 2021

How truly fantastic it was to see all of our lovely year 3 children back together in school once more! And we have been so impressed with the way they have come back to school, keen and ready to learn. May we take this opportunity to thank you all again for all of your support and hard work with the remote learning over the past half term.

The children have been learning lots of disgusting yet interesting facts about the toilet habits of the Roman – I have no doubt some of these will have been shared. We wrote a short paragraph for a virtual museum to teach others about toilet habits, gladiators blood, medicine and food.

The children started the Fraction unit this week. We have been very impressed with how the children approached solving the problems this week – some of which were very tricky.

For our first Science lesson we planted seeds. We are investigating what a seed needs to grow. Some of us are investigating if a plant needs compost, others are looking at whether light affects growth and others are interested to see how water affects seed growth. The children will be pleased to know that we watered the plants before we left school tonight including the ones in the cupboards!!

Dont forget to complete your home learning spelling task and the vocabulary task too. We look forward to seeing these next week.

Have a lovely weekend – let’s hope this storm passes quickly!!
