We hope you have all had a good week and that you are looking forward to the St Peter’s festival on Friday 29th June 2018.

This week, the children have been drafting, editing, publishing and evaluating their own Healthy Eating stories. In particular, Year Three enjoyed reading their stories to Year One children who then gave them feedback on their excellent choice of adjectives! On Friday, the children were given an opportunity to self-assess their stories and then peer-review them using ‘2 stars and 1 wish’. We were delighted at both the quality and quantity of the children’s writing. Well done, Year Three! Next week, we look forward to learning about Explanation Texts.

In Maths, both classes have taken part in a range of addition and subtraction problems. We have encouraged the children to prove their understanding of the challenge problems set, through solving them in a variety of ways and providing a written response (reasoning) to explain how they reached their own answers. Both classes have also focused upon Times Table facts – please ensure your child completes the Maths challenge of ‘look, cover, write, check’ in their Home Learning diary.

We hope you have all had a good week and that you have continued to enjoy the sun and the World Cup!

In English, the children have continued their work on Healthy Eating stories. In particular, we have explored how to use verbs, adverbs and prepositions in order to describe the movement of a character. Furthermore, the children have been using their emotion banks, along with subordinating conjunctions and pronouns, to create a variety of Alan Peat sentences that convey the feelings of a character. Great work, Year three!

In Maths, we have continued our learning on Measurement. This week, we have focused upon reading scales and using our fractions and times tables knowledge to recognise intervals on a scale. Towards the end of the week, the children demonstrated ‘critical thinking’ when creating their very own measurement problems. Well done Year Three! Next week, we look forward to revisiting addition and subtraction with a particular focus upon mass (g, Kg) and capacity (ml, L).

We hope you have all had a good week and that you have enjoyed the recent sunshine.

This week, Year Three have evaluated their Dragon information pages – this was a brilliant opportunity for the children to consider the strengths and areas for improvement within their finished pieces, both in pair groups (peer assessment) and individually (self assessment). We then introduced our new unit of learning, Healthy Eating. As part of this topic, Year Three are exploring the text Doug Lugg, Boy Slug before writing their own Healthy Eating story involving transforming characters.

In Maths, the children have continued their learning on measure. In particular, they have been taught how to measure the perimeter of shapes as well as use their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes to complete ‘missing side’ problems. Furthermore, we were impressed to see that both classes were able to use a range of strategies when calculating the perimeter of regular shapes – these included Addition, times tables as well as Multiplication. Well done Year Three!

At the end of the week, Year Three took part in a STEM learning day (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The children worked in table groups and were given a project whereby they were required to create food and exercise plans for famous British athletes (swimmers, runners and jumpers). Across the day, both classes took part in a variety of activities about skeletons, muscles and nutrition.

We hope you have all had a pleasant week and that you have managed to avoid the recent showers!

This week, we have been using Pie Corbett to rehearse and perform an information text about Storm Unicorns. The children used props and actions in order to show their understanding of the key words used. Using the WAGOLL example as a guide, we then innovated the text in order to draft and edit our own Dragon information pages for the Science labs at Oaklands. After half term, we look forward to moving on to our new topic of learning, Healthy Eating. We shall be writing a narrative to teach other children about the importance of a balanced diet.

In Maths, we have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10. We then applied our learning in partner groups, when measuring objects around the room and converting our readings between centimetres and millimetres. After half term, we look forward to learning about Measure in further depth, beginning with Capacity (ml and L). During the holidays, look out for different types of measurement and be ready to report back to class when you return to school – did you measure ingredients for a cake, or read along the scale when measuring liquid in a watering can?

Please refer your child(ren) to the Home Learning sticker in their homework diaries – the activity shall enable the children to consider what Sacraments are as well as why they are important.

We hope you have all had a good week so far.

In English, we have been learning how to add detail to our information pages through the use of subordinating conjunctions and fronted adverbials. We then looked at an example of a Unicorn information page and worked  in groups to perform each paragraph to our peers and discuss the meaning of key vocabulary that had been used. It was great to see the children using actions and changing their tone of voice so as to show their understanding of the text. Well done Year Three!

In Maths, we have continued to learn how to use bar models to calculate fractions of an amount. The children were then given an opportunity to solve ‘Would you rather?’ comparison questions. Towards the end of the week, we started to look at how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator – both classes enjoyed competing a series of visual, number line and pyramid challenges.

We hope you have all had a pleasant week and that you have enjoyed the lovely sunshine.

In English, the children have evaluated their Dragon Newspaper reports. They worked with a partner to decide what went well and what could be improved next time. This was a powerful reflection as it enabled the children to revisit their work, celebrate their achievements then create their own personal targets. As the week progressed, we started our new unit on Dragon Information Pages. Through our learning across English and Guided Reading, we discussed a range of key features within the following information texts: Dragon websites, non-fiction books, radio transcripts and nature documentaries.

In Maths, Year Three have continued their learning on Fractions. With the support of counters, bar models and times table facts, the children were successful in calculating both unit (e.g. 1/4) and non-unit (e.g. 3/4) fractions of amounts. By the end of the week, we applied our learning to solve a variety of tricky comparison problems – for example, ‘Would you prefer 3/4 of 20 sweets, or 4/10 of them?’ We were very impressed by the children’s ability to explain their reasoning through written sentences, bar models and pictorial responses. Well done, Year Three!

We hope you have all had a great week and that you have been enjoying the sunshine as we near closer to the Bank Holiday weekend.

In English, the children have been learning how to draft, edit and publish a newspaper report. We have studied the different features within and across newspapers, before creating our very own Dragon Newspaper article. Next week, we look forward to learning more about Dragons and how to use technical vocabulary to describe their anatomical features. We shall then begin to look at different forms of Dragon information pages, including radio podcasts, articles on websites, as well as posters.

In Maths, Year Three have been working on fractions. In particular, they have been learning about fractions as being equal parts of a whole. We have also been building our own fraction walls and using them to spot patterns between numerators and denominators, for equivalent fractions. As ever, please ensure that your child completes the Maths challenge sticker in their Home Learning diaries – this shall be collected on Friday 11th May 2018.

This week, Year Three and Year Four enjoyed their visit to Sacred Heart Church. We took part in Mass and celebrated the beginning of the month of Mary.

We hope you have all had a pleasant week so far.

This week, the children have been learning how to write a factual and concise introduction for their newspaper articles. Both classes enjoyed using a green biro to edit their work and ensure that each introduction contained the 5Ws and factual information. As the week progressed, we then looked at a range of ‘real life’ articles and discussed the features of a newspaper. Using such clues, including vocabulary such as time conjunctions, the children were then able to put a ‘muddled up’ newspaper article into order before planning their very own article about the dragon invasion in Year Three.

In Maths, the children have consolidated their knowledge of using the expanded column method for subtraction and finding the difference between three digit numbers. We then applied this learning to the context of Money, calculating the amount of change that would be received from a £5 or £10 note when purchasing items at a dragon shop. By the end of the week, the children took part in a challenge that involved addition and subtraction (i.e. calculating the total cost of 2 items before finding the difference to work out the change received from £5 or £10). We were very impressed by the children’s reasoning skills – they could discuss and explain several possible combinations of coins that they could have received from a cashier, for their change. Well done Year Three!

We hope you have all been enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

This week, the children were very excited to find out that a Dragon had invaded the classroom over the Easter Holidays! Both classes explored the Crime Scene at St. Peter’s school by using the 5 senses, then generated a variety of questions about the events that took place. The following day, Year Three held a Town Hall meeting – the children took part (as news reporters) by asking their questions to Mr Crozier, Professor Walls, Mr Chapman and Mrs D. By the end of the week, both classes were taught how to convert reported speech into direct speech, using direct commas. The children enjoyed scanning local newspapers to find suitable verbs as alternatives for ‘said’. Well done Year Three!

In Maths, we have been learning about Addition in the context of Statistics and Data. At the beginning of the week, the children were given bar graphs about the occurrence of UK dragon sightings. Using place value counters and diennes, the pupils were able to problem solve and calculate which two areas had a total number of sightings that was closest to 200. On Friday, St. Peter’s took part in a Deep Learning day for Growth Mindset. Both Year Three classes had successfully problem-solved their way out of a tricky ‘learning pit’ when given a pack of tricky Dragon problems to complete. Great Commitment and Critical thinking, well done Year Three!

We hope you have all had a great week so far.

This week, Year Three have been very busy across their curricular learning! In English, the children have published and evaluated their slave diary entries. Both classes showed excellent collaboration when they colour-coded their work and then shared with a partner for ‘2 stars and a wish’ (i.e. two successes and one suggestion for improvement). Towards the end of the week, Year Three were given a non-fiction Roman text and participated in the challenge of correcting any spelling and punctuation errors. It was fantastic to see the children using their thesauruses independently, as a means of locating more powerful adjectives that those provided to them. Well done Year Three, an example of great critical thinking!

In Maths, the children have continued to work upon multiplication and division. In particular, they have enjoyed tricky mastery and reasoning tasks including scaling problems. Both classes also worked in pairs, to interpret a set of word problems before categorising them as Multiplication or Division questions. The children used a wide range of methods in order to solve them, before comparing which method was the most efficient. After half term, we look forward to learning about Addition and Subtraction in the context of statistics and data.

During our Science unit, we have enjoyed planning our own ‘plant growth’ investigations. Each group chose a variable to test and then worked together to monitor their results whilst ensuring all other variables remained constant. Afterwards, we then discussed ‘fair testing’ and the children were given an opportunity to explain whether or not they felt they had conducted a fair test. Please see the photos below…

We would like to thank Mrs Sumba for all of the support she has provided in Hippo class across the Autumn and Spring terms. She will be missed by all of the children and the Year 3 team – we hope to see her again at St Peter’s sometime in the future! We would also like to welcome back Mrs Stewart, who has recently returned from maternity leave. The children look forward to seeing her in the classroom across the Summer terms.
