The Rainforest

Hello,

This week, the children have continued to enjoy a rich and varied curriculum as they have progressed through their Year 3 Rainforest topic.

In English, the children have been learning about how to write an argument from a specific point of view. Across the week, Year 3 have enjoyed role-playing as different characters (i.e. explorers, Rainforest tribes and businessmen) in order to deepen their understanding and empathy towards the key issues surrounding our world’s forests, namely deforestation. The children then took part in a class debate to verbally rehearse their arguments as to whether a Rainforest in Brazil should get cut down to make way for a new hotel. Year 3 found this activity very engaging, as reflected by the exceptional quality of their persuasive letters to the Brazilian government. Well done Year Three!

In Maths, the children have been learning how to identify and compare fractions, using a variety of resources in order to support their learning and exploration of fractions. In particular, the children have enjoyed using numicon, fraction walls and shapes to help visualize the values and proportions of different fractions. Next week, the children will be working towards how to find fractions of an amount. A challenge for the children this weekend – can you use objects around the house, to look at ‘equal parts of a whole’ and find fractions of amounts, e.g. a 12-pack of eggs with only 4 eggs in the box?

Finally, we would like to thank all of the children for their brilliant Rainforest home learning this week – we have been very impressed by the work that the children have produced, and appreciate the time and support that parents have given to assist the children with their projects. Photos shall be uploaded onto the blog shortly.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Honeywell and Mr Austin
