30th Week in Ordinary Time

How do we show love towards our neighbour at St. Peter’s? Who is our neighbour? Whole school worship encouraged children to think about how God wants us to treat everyone as our neighbour. This is one of the ways that we show that we love the Lord our God with all our hearts. Reception children joined us for whole school worship for the first time this week and already knew that sharing was one way we could show our love to our neighbours (our friends at school). A Girl in Year 6 rightly said that we just need to follow our Mission Statement. Everything we do at St. Peter’s places Christ at the centre, and we know that the way we treat each other is a reflection of this.
In RE lessons we continue to learn how to place Christ at the centre of our lives through the example that the saints show us. We learn how to be merciful, prayerful, humble and to seek forgiveness when we fail to follow their example.

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The 27th Week of Ordinary Time began in the usual way with whole school worship. It was a rare occasion for me not to be present so I can only recall the message as relayed to me by 5 year olds! They were very clear that it is important that we share the harvest. They told me that God wasn’t very happy with people who did not share. Mr. Cunningham explained that water soup would be rather bland and boring but added to leeks, broccoli and other vegetables a great soup could be created. Sharing the harvest has a great effect!
We turn the focus in our classrooms from creation to prayers, saints and feasts. Who are saints? How do they inspire us? How can we deepen our relationship with God through them and through prayer?
Children in Year 3 were surprised to learn that they already knew the canticle of St. Francis ‘Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace’ as we sing a version of it at school. They found out how much the words of the canticle affect our everyday lives as Catholics.

Year 1 have been thinking about how they pray, where they pray and what helps them to focus their thoughts on Jesus. Next week they will be thinking about how we use the word ‘Alleluia’ to help us praise God.
If any of you are attending parties this weekend talk to your children about the organisation that is required to get ready for a party. Did you receive / give out an invite? Did you need to buy a gift? A new outfit? This will help them to engage in this Monday’s upcoming worship.
Have a great weekend,
Sarah Luter

26th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today we celebrated CAFOD fast day. Our CAFOD volunteers, Patrick and Isobel, made their final visit to St. Peter’s to lead worship before they move away from the parish. Children and adults supported the CAFOD campaign by dressing as brightly as they could. We certainly did ‘Brighten Up’ for CAFOD. Isobel and Patrick talked to us all about the valuable work that CAFOD do in their mission to help wold wealth to be equally shared. We found out about some families in El Salvador and how £38 pounds would enable them to set up a farm so that they can become self sufficient! £1 is enough to send a child to a club improving their education and keeping them safe. So thank you for all your donations today – they really will make a huge difference.
We wish Isobel and Patrick well for their future and will miss their informative assemblies.

In RE lessons this week children have also been learning about harvest and answering questions about the celebration of harvest. Year 3 will be asking: ‘is it important to celebrate harvest?’. Year 5 will be challenged to answer the question: ‘how do the institutions of harvest and the Eucharist link?’.
Just a reminder Year 2 have their first whole year group liturgy on Tuesday 10th at 10.20. We look forward to welcoming friends and family.
Have a restful weekend,
Sarah Luter

25th Week of Ordinary Time

Mr. Crozier led worship this week and the message was very clear – everyone is welcome in God’s kingdom. Jesus loves everyone equally. We heard the reading ‘The Parable of the Worker’ and some children helped demonstrate that initially it seemed that the workers were treated unfairly. A Year 6 girl quickly spotted the meaning behind the parable that Jesus loves us all equally regardless of what stage in our lives we decide to follow Him. This week children will work on putting others first in response to the parable.

During lesson time children have continued to learn about Creation. Many children have heard about Jesus’s baptism and have thought about the similarities and differences between His baptism and a modern day baptism in the Catholic Church. We know that God called Jesus through baptism to continue to protect His creation. This will lead to hearing about how Jesus in turn called His disciples to help Him.

Worship this week reminded children about forgiveness. Mrs. Knight encouraged children to think about how many times they should forgive each other and how this feels. Children recognised that forgiving is not always easy. During class worship children will continue to reflect on forgiveness and the quote from whole school worship: ‘If you forgive others the wrongs they have done to you, your Father in heaven will also forgive you.’

During RE lessons this week children have begun their learning about creation which is our topic for the next few weeks. In Year 3 children are looking at their responsibility towards God’s creation and thinking about why they were given this responsibility. They are also examining the role of Baptism in new creation and the specific duties of the Godparent. Year 5 have been thinking about how they personally are unique and have a unique place in God’s creation.

Here are some of Year 3’s posters and explanations of how and why they look after God’s creation.

23rd Week of Ordinary Time

Autumn Term has arrived! It was wonderful to welcome the children back to school last week looking happy and refreshed. We hope you had a great summer with your families. We began the school week with whole school worship led by Mr. Cunningham. He linked the Gospel reading to our new start at school and our mission statement and shared this reflection:

We give you praise, O God, for everything that is new and beautiful, for everything which holds promise and brings us joy. Bless us as we start this new year with our friends and teachers. Help us to make the most of every chance we have to start afresh. May we show love to one another and to all. May the new beginning of this school year remind us that you give us chances to start over again and again. Help us to forgive others as we receive your forgiveness. Help us to learn and to work together. Allow us to achieve our goals in life. Help us to listen when we should and to know te best words when we speak.

Our first Monday whole school worship of this term was very relevant to the children’s learning about their relationships and friendships. In the Gospel reading we heard; ‘where two or three are gathered together I am there’. We began by simply reflecting on Jesus’s presence with us. We then thought about how when we argue and upset each other it is hard to be together and we go away from where Jesus is. Jesus wants us not only to say sorry and forgive but also to explain to those who have hurt us how they have made us feel.

In class all children will be looking in depth at our mission statement analysing what it means and what it looks like in action. Our mission statement is ….“To walk hand in hand with God, loving Him, loving each other and loving ourselves, doing our best with the gifts He gave us to make the world a better place.  Year 2 children made posters showing how the mission statement looks in reality in our school.

Year 3 made links between stories in the bible and our mission statement showing why we feel and behave the way we do at St. Peter’s.

I will look forward to updating you each week with all news that is RE related! Next week we have our first whole school mass to look forward to.

God bless,

Sarah Luter

Our first week in year 3!

It was wonderful to welcome the children back to school on Tuesday. It feels like summer is a distant memory already!

The children have begun their learning about the Stone Age and have been archaeologists in maths searching for hundreds, tens and ones ‘stones’. We have already had some Stone Age home learning following the pyramid that was sent home on Tuesday. In English the children have been writing about their holidays concentrating on paragraphs.

As well as the pyramid for home learning please share your child’s new homework diary with them. There is a very valuable section at the front which includes prayers that we say at school. At the back is a section about behaviour.

Soon we will be sending a date for our welcome meeting – please check book bags. We look forward to meeting you all.

Have a restful week, please visit weekly for important Year 3 information!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Luter, Miss Honeywell, Mrs Chapman and Mrs. Wickes

15th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Make the impossible possible was the theme of this weeks worship. Mrs. Pfeiffer talked to the school about a disabled boy who became world class at wheelchair athletics. He said that if you change the way that you think about disability then anything is possible. He was a determined young man who made choices that enhanced his quality of life. By making choices through our relationship with Jesus we can do the same; our lives can flourish because of our faith.

In class all children continue their journey in learning about sacraments. Children in Year 5 have been learning about the wedding of Sarah and Tobias and then linking this to the promises made in marriage today.

Children in year 4 and 5 have been considering why there are less priests, nuns and practising Catholics in the world today. Year 5 turned their attention to whether it was because God was calling less people. They had plenty of their own ideas showing an excellent understanding of theology but also drawing on information that they found on the internet for example the quote by Pope Francis:

pope

Children in Year one have been exploring symbols of peace which are used in the bible and in the sacraments.

We have just one week left of our Summer Term. On Tuesday Year 6  enjoyed a much deserved fun day with bouncy castles on the field and a disco in the hall. We will miss all of our year 6 children and wish them love and prayers for their future.

Enjoy the last week of school runs!

Best wishes,

Sarah Luter

14th Sunday of Ordinary Time

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ The message from this weeks Gospel may have had some words that were unknown to many children at the beginning of this weeks whole school worship but the message is easy to understand. Jesus is always there for us. We can share, at any time, our worries and concerns with Him and He will make us feel better. He supports us when things are difficult.

This week Year 6 had their final mass with us. We hope that the parents who joined us had happy memories dating right back to their first whole year group liturgy in reception. We also hope that they enjoyed their cream teas after mass! We have witnessed the children grow spiritually throughout their years here and wish them a happy and fulfilled journey to their next school.

Last week Year 2 had their final liturgy of the year. It was a beautiful celebration which many parents came to share.

The theme was Pentecost. There was some wonderful acting, thoughtful prayers and reflections and some superb singing. Well done Year 2. Next Year you will have masses in school and at church to help to prepare you for Holy Communion.

Our unit of learning in RE in school at the moment is sacraments. Children are learning about the significance of the sacraments in their own spiritual lives. Children in reception have been learning about their own baptisms and sharing photos. Children in year 6 have been looking at the Rites of Confirmation and comparing them to the Rites of Baptism.

Below are some pictures of the front entrance display created by the reception staff and children.

13th Sunday of Ordinary Time

As followers of Christ how can we welcome Him into our lives? During whole school worship this week children thought about how they can be welcoming in their everyday lives. How can they welcome visitors to their homes? How can they make sure that their friends always feel welcome? Mrs. Osborne explained that if we welcome others into our lives we welcome God at the same time. By being welcoming to others we welcome God.

Lessons in class this week have focussed on sacraments with each year group beginning to think of the relevance of the sacraments in their own lives. Children in Year 2 led a liturgy together on Tuesday and they were joined by many family members and friends. We just have one year group celebration left this academic year which will be the Year 6 Mass followed by cream teas for family and friends. The mass will be held in the school hall on 11th July at 1.30.

Congratulations to all the children who have taken or are taking their First Holy Communion in our local churches. Their photos are proudly displayed at school for all to see, and I know that the children have enjoyed the congratulations given to them during worship time.
