Hampshire Illustrated Book Award 2024

Over the past 6 weeks, Year 5 pupils in Cassowary and Kookaburra class have been reading, exploring and reviewing six picture books, chosen by the School Library Service.  The children have explored the artistic style of the illustrations in each book and have considered how the pictures enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the story.

Throughout Hampshire, year 5 pupils have been reading these books and have each now voted for their personal favourite. Our year 5’s have voted overwhelmingly for ‘The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish’ by Chloe Savage.

Book Borrowers’ Leaderboard

CONGRATULATIONS to the Puffer Fish Class, who have borrowed the most library books this year and have been rewarded with an afternoon movie and popcorn, during the final week of the summer term.

Joining Puffer Fish are the Key Stage 2 winners, Hippo Class who have borrowed 1182 books, closely followed by Lions with 1065.

Thank you to everyone who has come into the library to find a quiet place, to browse through story books, non-fiction texts and newspapers and to borrow and regularly return their books.

A special thank you to the excellent junior librarians, who have worked diligently throughout the year to keep the library tidy, arrange displays and exchange books in the classroom book corners.

As the summer holidays begin, please consider joining in with the ‘Marvellous Makers’ Summer Reading Challenge at your local library, as described below. If you complete the challenge, remember to bring your certificate and medal into school, to be awarded a special prize during library time.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer holiday and looking forward to welcoming you back to the library in September.

Summer Reading Challenge 2024

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is called ‘Marvellous Makers’ and will be arriving online at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk and in your local library from Saturday 13th July 2024.  You can sign up for free in your local library or online, to receive your ‘Marvellous Makers’ collector folder.  The challenge is to read six books over the summer holiday and collect stickers and other rewards for each book you read.  When completed, you will be awarded an eco-friendly sustainable medal and a certificate.

St Peters will also be giving a reward to every child that completes the Summer Reading Challenge.  All you need to do is bring in your certificate when we return to school in September and show it to Mrs Porter in the library, to receive a small prize.

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to keep reading during the summer holidays, ensuring they are ready for a great start to the new term in the autumn. So please encourage your child to take on the challenge and maybe you could aim to read six books too!

Hampshire Information Book Award

Year 4 pupils throughout Hampshire have now read the five information books included in this year’s award. Congratulations to the overall winner, ‘The Wild Life of Animals’ by Mike Barfield and Paula Bossio.

Hampshire Picture Book Award

During the chilly Spring Term, pupils in Puffer Fish and Turtle Class have been enjoying their weekly library times, listening to four new stories and looking at the amazing illustrations in picture books chosen by the Hampshire School Library Service.

Having read each book, the children were asked to vote for their favourite, taking into consideration the style, story and stretch in each picture book.  School children throughout Hampshire took part in the award and every one of our votes counted towards the overall winner, ‘Food Fight’, written and illustrated by Alex Latimer.  Maybe your child will choose one of these lovely, new books to bring home and share with you.

Hampshire Information Book Award

Over the Spring Term, during their library time, pupils in Kangaroo and Koala class are going to read each of these beautiful, new information books.

Together we will explore the non-chronological texts and evaluate the information presented in a variety of styles.  We will aim to develop the pupils’ confidence in using information texts and celebrate the value of non-fiction books in an electronic age.

After the half-term holiday, each pupil will vote for their favourite title. These votes will be submitted to the School Library Service, along with those from Year 4 pupils throughout Hampshire. The winning author and illustrator will be announced on Tuesday 19th March 2024.
